Mk3 Octavia VRS TDI
Discussion
Friend is considering an estate, does 20k miles a year and wants a manual version.
He will be buying 1-2 year old version from a dealer so will be covered by warranty initially, but are there any issues to look out for with these? I hear the ride can be a bit firm, he is only looking at 18" wheels not those awful 19's!
Do they come with xenon's and the basic sat nav as standard since new? What other desirable spec should he be looking for? Heated windscreen, variable boot floor, heated seats appeal. Can cruise be retrofitted?
Running costs, I see long term magazine reports saying 45mpg, is this accurate for the manual, or are they a genuine 50mpg car if driven sensibly (rather than trying to achieve ultimate efficiency)
Apologies for all the questions!

Sat nav was an option until MY16 updates came out (late 15 plate onwards) the MY16 brought a 6.5 inch screen and optional Apple CarPlay too.
Xenons and cruise (non adaptive) are standard, as is climate control. Leatherette and F&R sensors are options but half ish leather and rear sensors are standard.
I'd be looking at golf GTD estates too they are well specced as standard with nav, keyless, winter pack, front and rear sensors, adaptive cruise, xenons etc

Not much to worry about really as it's still a very new car and covered by manufacturer's warranty. Maybe once they're 5-years old some common problems might emerge.
I've got a GTD with the same engine and have been pretty happy with it. Admittedly not as fun as the petrol version but decent enough performance and will return a genuine 50mpg

I've had a Leon ST 184 for a few months now, which is basically the same car. I chose it over the octavia because at the time Seat were offering lots of options for free (tech pack, convenience pack, 18" wheels, metallic paint).
First 3800 miles it has averaged 49.8mpg according to trip computer. This has been 20 miles to work every day and one 900 miles round trip to France.

Thanks all, he did look at the Leon but wasn't happy with the interior quality. I have a Leon as well, agree that Octavia does look a bit more expensive but also is more expensive to buy and comes with less kit.
The GTD is a bit more money again but not as much as I was expecting, will take a look.
