Lights for MOT
Discussion
Hello all, just working through a few little fixes on my recent purchase '83 yr 911sc. It's a LHD American import. Something that's just occurred to me is whether the lights are actually up to UK MOT standard (even though it came with trader arranged one). It's got the usual US yellow front (and rear marker) lights which aren't really forward facing. Headlamps contain only dip and main beam. Is that acceptable as front side lights? Also no rear fog lamp. I'm dubious that this is correct. Any pointers? Thanks.
Depends on how pragmatic your MoT man is. I'd imagine every MoT man will want a rear fog. I removed the one bolted to my valance and rewired it to my offside reversing light, leaving the nearside reversing light. I had the wiring there for this though, whereas you may need to install the switch, etc. As for front sidelights, mine has passed its last two MoTs without them installed as I have LED headlights with dipped and full beam. If it failed I would simply string some 5W incandescents into the housing for the test then remove them. I don't park the car outside on unlit roads so I never had need of them.
Thanks for that. There is a fog light switch on dashboard - not sure if it was for front or rear lights but can use that and hopefully trace wiring (which is a bit messy under dashboard). Might just add a cheap under bumper fog light for MOT, but swapping out the reversing light could be a good option. A bit annoying I've got to do it really and that I missed not seeing it earlier. I'm always a bit dubious that trader arranged MOTs can ocassionally be less comprehensive than usual... Don't plan on leaving mine out after dark either!
I think you need white front and red rear position lamps. The fronts can be yellow if within yellow headlamp units.
You will need a rear fog. The headlight test is more complex depending on the headlamp type. My MoT tester was happy that my (US) headlights didn't kick up to the right on dipped beam.
