What about having a day in London with your dad on his birthday and popping into the Bank of England - open 9.30 to 5 Monday to Saturday - and getting one over the counter? Then walk to the Old Nat West Tower and have a glass of champagne on the 42nd floor with a superb view of London. (Search for Vertigo42. You have to book.)

Would love to do that, but he has just started home kidney dialysis and lives near Edinburgh and I am working and live in Dorset! You need to locate a friend who can go and get you one/some and post it/them to you.
I got my sister in Edinburgh to do it for the Scottish plastic £5 notes. However, they limited the number she was allowed as loads of people wanted them. So I sent her husband and a few of their friends in to lol. I've got loads of them now and they're all early print numbers. So in many years time they'll be worth more than face value and I might trade them for other rare coins or notes when the time comes. Normal £5 notes have a shelf life of around a year before they're replaced but these plastic ones are designed to last so will have to see.
So don't get him just one, get a few. I'm planning on getting quite a few for my collection.
If you want something a bit different get some Zimbawean dollars. You can get trillions of dollar notes for a few quid on eBay. Very Austin powers. Scary hyper inflation though in reality.
Also they're some nice £100, £50 or £20 coins out there now. An expensive way to buy silver but they're limited production mints and are nice keepsakes. Also sell for more outright once the production run ends. Not legal tender on the mainland though not that it matters.
