I am not an alcoholic and never have been, so maybe the title is a little misleading.

I want some advice on how to drink more/better.

First of all, Im 22. I used to be able to drink heavily and enjoyed it and went on regular nights out, but about 2 years ago I went on a stag do, ended up in a hospital (Just on a drip nothing serious) and since then its not been the same. I cant drink as much, or even stomach it, I feel like I will be sick after having a couple.

Now the reason I am wanting to change that, Is that I am going to university next month and want to live the full experience. Now not being able to drink is going to be a problem.

So PH, what can I do?

Practice.

No-one likes beer at first taste.... years later everyone think they've always liked it.

You've just got to get back into the swing of things.

I'm no doctor, but I can't imagine there's a lot you can do. Sounds to me the damage has been done and your body can no longer cope with alcohol. Sorry to disappoint, but hopefully there'll be someone on here who knows better than I do.

If my uni experience is anything to go by my nights went far better (with a higher quality output) when I wasn't paralytic.

The fit ones didn't seem to like the dribbling, vomming mess that was myself after 4 stongbow black's and a few jagerbomb's!

Take of that what you will...

Else its like all things, practice helps...

How about not worry about something so trivial and just enjoy the experience. Heavy drinking is so overrated and all it will really do is contribute to your overdraft. Go out, have fun, and spend less. beer

Maybe heavy drinking isnt the answer then, maybe enjoyable drinking is.

Just go at my own pace and enjoy it, no pressure.

Heh, i did that. Sodium something or other was in my bag.

Mixing drinks + dirty pints + heatwave = bad times.

I'm not one to get holier than thou but that's ridiculous, how can you think that being hospitalised from drink is nothing serious? It isn't "normal" you know?

Why do we as a culture seem to think that drinking so much that you end up in hospital is a good thing?

Sodium Chloride 0.9%?

Rehydrating drip if you can't hold down water without puking everywhere.

It's not big and it's not clever.

I can count on the thumbs of one hand the people I know who have hospitalised themselves through just drinking ( not drinking and falling, drinking and fighting, drinking and smashing things)
that's with 25 years+ of experience.

Final Piece of advice for going to uni and not overdoing it:
Don't join the rugby team.

try changing what you drink.
Tried Cider at around 15 and despised the stuff, then from age 18-21 I drank fairly heavily, mostly Lager - to the point of probably being an alcoholic. gave it all up for a few years and had a pint of lager at a wedding one day and I couldn't stomach it. It was almost as if my body had developed an intolerance to it so I stayed off the drink again for a while, until I was at a BBQ one day and the magners ciders were being passed around and remember saying that I hated cider, but was told this was a nice drink and to give it a go. I drank it, liked it and have pretty much stuck to ciders since. still can only manage one pint of lager before I start feeling ill.
Tending to move more towards shorts like Jack Daniels these days tho, and find it easier to drink that all night than fizzy stuff.

Drinking heavy is not a good thing either, I think over the years I drank heavy my body built up the tolerance to it and it now takes me ages and costs a fortune to get suitably pissed. last time out for a mates birthday I spent close to £120 and was no more pissed than when I started the night! rolleyes

I meant in regards to repurcussions. I am aware of how serious going to hospital is agfter drinking.

I just didnt want people to think I had serious damage from it it was more to quell any questions that may be asked than anything.

31 and still not much of a drinker.

The first pint of pretty much any beer goes down lovely - nice and refreshing. But the second one always takes an age and just sort of becomes an effort.

It's become a running joke with friends now - they always try to find something I've not tried every time we see them. We had a weekend away with families earlier in the year and they decided to all try Bovril Hot Toddies. Didn't go down too well with the wives!

Enjoy not drinking. You don't need or want to be part of a world that needs to drink in order to have a good time.

This. No-one is going to respect you more/less if you're not a big drinker. Only drinking a little is NOT A BAD THING!
