I picked my parents up from Luton airport last week and noticed (not for the first time, by the way) a couple of policemen with what looked like semi automatic machine guns!
Why?
I know security at airports is red hot these days, but why machine guns?
Would'nt an ordinary hand gun suffice?
Surely a machine gun is for killing lots of people instead of half a dozen!
I was tempted to ask them but did'nt fancy spending a night in jail as a possible terrorist suspect!!

That was hilarious, as if a tank can help in any way whatsoever in a terrorist attack. That was just Phony Tony's way of trying to convince the public we were in mortal danger and needed to attack Iraq....

Friend of mines mum was shot by a terrorist/loony at a ticket desk in LAX a couple years ago.Security then turned him into a Swiss cheese.

Airport police carry the same weapons as firearms police - an H&K MP5 sub machine gun, but as already mentioned, semi-auto rather than fully auto. And a Gloch side arm. They used to carry Smith and Wesson revolvers but changed to Gloch semi autos as they use the same rounds as the H&K.
The reason that a side arm on its own would be next to useless is because of accuracy. The accuracy of a rifle is much greater than a pistol. I think, but am not certain, that the way the H&K is carried with the collapsible stock looped around the shoulder, it's quicker to level than to draw a pistol - pretty important when you consider that someone with a knife can cover about 20m in the time it takes to draw a pistol, aim and fire.

ing science. Yes, shooting to wound is not an exact science... however the phrase used was "Security then turned him into a Swiss cheese." Now I don't know what this guys pain threshold was but I'd be surprised if he could continue to shoot at people whilst full of holes...
In the same way being nice to the people you are occupying is not an exact science... the British army are much better at it (friendly landrovers vs massive armoured humvees, soft hats vs hard helmets, no sunglasses vs sunglasses etc) than the Americans. I suspect that in a British airport they wouldn't go for the american strategy of mincing the guy.

Yes, I'm sure they'd talk nicely, try and calm him down. "Please sir, how about you set the gun down? No one wants to hurt you, we understand perfectly." Yeah right. He's already killed two people, he's holding a gun. He has no rights.
