997 & vandalism & Advice
Discussion
Hi
I currently have an M3 and considering switching to a 997s. I have scanned the archives here, however have a few questions.
I will be using the car everyday (Southampton area), is the car a magnet for people "keying" the bodywork, or is it generally ignored.
I have a youngster - can you fit a childseat in the "backseats" - I currently have an isofix car seat from Britax
I dont have any history with porsche, however I noticed dialog on an RMS problem - is this fixed with the new model. The M3 had a reputation for engine blowing and I is one of the reasons I want to get rid.
I am considering the 997s - are there any "must have options" that for resale help the process. I am considering the following:
- Sports exhaust
- Sat Nav
- Sports Seats
- Parking Assist
- Type Monitoring
Is the Bose worth getting - or is the standard set up good enough.
Colour wise I my M3 is steel grey - which is great in terms of hiding the dirt. For the this car I am considering midnight blue or GT silver.
Any other tips welcome.

RMS still exists, but warranty covers it no problemo...budget in the extended warranty each year after it is 2 years old though..£750 IIRC
My Speed Yellow C4S never got vandalised..used it in London, Basildon, Bournemouth and some very doggy areas of Essex.
SatNav seems popular, but very expensive option..I run a few cars so I favour TomTom instead, sold my C4S without satnav with very little problem...this was the only option the OPC's were interested in when pricing it up however.
Youngsters...
About £450 buys and fits the front airbag/Isofix fittings for front seat..we did that in the 987 we just got (much neater than 996 we had before) you aren't tied to Porsche overpriced childseats for the front now. Rear seats are narrow, but you can get Britax to fit I believe.

The Bose option on 997 is (in my opinion) FFFAAAAARRRRR superior to that in the 996 and well worth having. As for the fitting of your own CD changer - it MAY be possible, but I'm thinking that because the Audio/Nav/Media systems are all linked by an optical fibre 'MOST' network and the PCM/AMP etc need to be coded to know whether or not a CD Changer is fitted, its probably more hassle than its worth. I reckon you'd end up replacing the complete system - ie Head unit, amp, nav system, as well as CD changer...
I had BOSE in the 996 and 987, it's a decent system for making lots of noise..I'm particularly impressed with the system in the 987 and how it adjusts for ambient noise. I'm also happier to have Porsche do the fitting as I have instant comeback should it be shoddy/rattle/break...saying that it costs a premium and isn't the best thing in the market.
Fitting your own CD changer should be a doddle..unless the MOST bus thingy precludes it? I dunno for sure.
Oh, and I had switchable sports exhaust..made a lovely noise, which is important to me regarding the driving experience, but pricey and if you are a real poseur you won't like the fact it silences itself between 30-45mph..not so good for high street cruising LOL (you can disable this feature though..moving a jumper.

Sorry... forgot.... Sports Exhaust - C2 or C2S? C2S sounds fantastic already, probably not an issue. Maybe on a C2, but it is available to fit aftermarket too.
Sports seats - great, much better than on 996, but then so are the standard seats.
Sat Nav - deffo. If only for resale. And then you might as well go the whole hog and get the phone module too. Sure, the whole shooting match is going to cost you a couple of grand, but we're talking about a £60k 911...not a £10k Focus.
