Switch to the more fuel efficient and more powerful (not to mention reliable) DFI engines.
Introduction of PDK replacing Tip
DRLs
LED lighting
Front bumper
Suspension in general and PASM specifically. Now FAR more compliant on UK roads, and a Sport mode that is actually useable. (Huge gains in ride/handling)
Not sure if the steering was changed, or the overhaul on the suspension makes it feel better.
PCM3 is FAR better, iPod/USB/Bluetooth

My brother has a 997.2 4S and my wife a 997.1 4S and often jump from one to other.
PCM is major upgrade in Gen 2. Easier to drive quicker. Engine a real boon reliability wise - so far.
Downside. Gen 2 engine has less character and quieter (even within PSE). Not sure about ride either - my brother prefers Gen 1 in that respect - although we all agree Sport is unusable on most roads in Gen 1.
If I was in the market again I would go Gen 2 - but 10K+ is quite a premium.

I think "unusable" is harsh but agree it's not great on UK roads. I hardly ever use it. Great thread and just what I have been doing.
That blue is gorgeous.
I am picking up my Gen 2 3.8S from Paragon next Saturday.
It will be my third Porsche, but my first 911.
I am as excited as a 5 year old on Christmas Eve, and that is with a week to go.
I will put a picture up when I get a moment, but link for now...

Interesting, what are the differences? Could it be the older car was more tired (not suggesting you skimped on maintenance, just curious). I thought the key changes were DFI engine and PDK in lieu of tipronic.
Hi mate, the old car had 12000 that's twelve thousand miles with full main dealer history, lovely car but the 997.2 is just better Okay so maybe it's time to offer another perspective........
I bought my 997.1 about 2 years ago now, when I was looking I was swaying between .1 or .2 .
Lots of people on here say the 997.2 is better but what does better mean? Yes as an everyday car the .2 is better, if you want auto the .2 is better, if you are worried about engine issues certainly the .2 is better...but I think that's where the simple 'better' ends. For me the issue with the .2 was the LED lights and the DFI engine, both to me make the .2 a bit more Audi like, easy to use, great car, and PCM is certainly much much better but a little straight forward.
The .1 on the other hand does seem more 911'ish after a couple of years of playing with it, the mechanics seem to basically be 996 all the way, which means there are loads of guides, help, and cheaper parts around, there are clearly things that need sorting out on it (stereo for instance), and generally as a second car I think it fits the bill a bit better.
The other big issue I think with a 997.2 is the cost, many even with 50k on need suspension refreshes and such like and stick that lot on top of the current asking prices and you could have near on a 50k car.
I also think that the general tread of all 911's is that the later models have their day in the beginning only for the earlier version to gain support in time (996.1 seem pretty desirable), however maybe the engine issues will be an obstacles, unless over time the older nature of the beast is appreciated.
I would have a 997.2 tomorrow as an everyday car, but as a weekend car at the current prices the 997.1 has got to be good value even with the engine gamble .......
