Co2 reductions and Gas power
Discussion
With all the discussion we have had recently about the merits of renewable energy sources one important thing to realise is that by switching from Coal power generation to Gas the UK is already making big reductions in it's CO2 emissions.
For every unit of electricity generated Gas produces 40% less Co2 than Coal, and also produces less of other pollutants.
The switch from coal to Gas (despite a brief John Prescott induced delay) has therefore enabled the
Uk to exceed it's Kyoto targets -Under this target the Uk agreed to reduce it's emmissions of Co2 by 12.5% on 1990 levels by 2008-12-This is predicted to be comfortable exceeded with reductions 5% higher than the target.

Even more important is to realise that this procedure was started before Blair even came to power, for him then to claim the credit for being "environmentally friendly" is nauseating, frankly.
Indeed Labour's only contribution was to impose a temporary halt on Construction of gas Power Plants in order to support the coal industry.

Exactly - given that we are talking long term investments, its irrelevant who is currently in power. Its all about the political commitment to address this for the future....
And we still have people bleating on about "save the planet" and "down with 4x4's" and "cars kill through polution"..... blah blah..... yet we as a nation manage to do enough to hit and over-achieve our targets. Have to say that its a good thing and one in the eye for the greenies....
This subject is interesting because it demonstrates the gap between 'true' and 'token' environmentalism.
Token environmentalism is as demonstrated by Labour. To talk earnestly about the environment, to denounce evil cars and to build pointless tokens such as wind turbines-This all plays very well on the evening news and so they give the appearance of doing something.
Meanwhile during the first few years of their time in office they did not authorise any more Gas power stations being built in order to protect the remnants of Britains coal industry. As we have already seen Producing electricity using gas produces 40% less Co2.
I always find issues such as these fascinating-The gap between what is shown to the masses in the news and the truth.
