Primary school bans pencil cases
A school has banned children from taking pencil cases into class in case they are used to hide sharp weapons. St Anne's Primary School in Denton, Greater Manchester, acted after a boy was cut with a letter opener by a pupil who had hidden it in a pencil case.
The nine-year-old boy suffered minor cuts to his chest and leg when he was involved in what the school say was "boisterous play".
The ban has been branded "ridiculous" and "extreme" by education campaigners.
The boy who carried out the attack has been suspended until Easter.
Glenys Dyer, head teacher at St Anne's, said: "We have banned all pupils from bringing pencil cases and their contents into school to prevent any other potentially harmful instruments being brought into the classroom."
She said the decision to exclude the child sent "a clear message to both the child and the school community that this is unacceptable behaviour which we take very seriously."
Ms Dyer added: "It was a boisterous play between two friends which got out of hand as a consequence of involving a letter opener which had inadvertently been brought into school in a pencil case by another child, and we believe there were no malicious intentions."
But Nick Seaton, chairman of the Campaign for Real Education, has criticised the school's ban.
He said: "Most parents will think it is ridiculous to ban pencil cases just because one child carries a letter opener in his.
"It seems a bit extreme. Serious action should be taken against the particular individual, but to ban pencil cases universally is silly."
A National Union of Teachers spokesman said he "sympathised" with the head teacher, but added: "Whether or not the banning of pencil cases is the right answer I'm really not sure at this stage."
For crying out loud! As a kid in Infant school I was stabbed in the arm with a Pencil. They didn't ban pencils then. What happened to a bit of common sence!
Edit: Oh and nobody got sue'd! My mum cheerfully picked me up and took me to the hospital to have it removed. She knew that kids get hurt occasionally. Generally they learn from it.

Boisterous play - that would be pretend swordfighting then, at a guess? That's what I'd do with a letter opener, and I left school 20 years ago.
Suspended 'til Easter eh? What a load of toss. What happened to 'don't bring it back or I'll take it off you and you can have it back on the last day before the summer holidays'? Great soft woolly PC bleeding heart ar5eholes

That reminds me of the time my school insisted we used smaller bags. We turned up and demanded that a teacher fit all the folders and sports kit into a bag of "suitable" size. They could not do it. My overriding image or 90% of teachers is a bunch of stupid people who cant see outside their own little patch of responcibility.

If you carry your gym kit in your pencil case I wouldn't like to meet you down at the sports centre!
Whats a sports centre?
You get the point though, ban pencil cases but let them come to school with bags that they could possibly conceal small semtex devices in.

Bloody Hell!
Suspended till Easter Pah, I won’t be surprised if he didn’t take the education minister to the court of human rights for some nonsense.
When I was 15 at school, the class idiot thought I was taking the piss out of him by asking my mate John "Can I borrow your Rubber Johnny?". Idiots name was Ian he walks and kicks me off my chair, unfortunately his toecap crushed my right kidney into the bottom of my lung. Apart from a serious winding I thought I was ok but then felt very unwell indeed. Found myself pissing huge volumes of blood and was hospitalised for over 2 weeks.
Because my left kidney was not up to the job I was on nil by mouth for about 4 days, no food no liquid, nightmare I tell you. + having a kidney disorder I was on a ward where the next youngest person to my tender 15 years was in his 60's. Oh what a laugh we had.
Eventually and only after the threat of some form of dialysis the left kidney built up some strength and I was discharged. I had already missed a week of my O-Levels and I kept suffering from blackouts which nobody understood.
22 years on and I still only have the one kidney and it does OK for me but I have high blood pressure which can be linked to kidney damage.
What happened to Ian, well he got hauled up to see the headmaster and was given a bollocking, his parent forced him to give me three weeks pay from his Saturday job cos I couldn’t work and naturally he took a jolly good pasting from the skinhead / MOD contingent at school. Which I found amusing because both those two groups had spent the previous 4 years bullying me, I guess they saw Ian for the person that he really was.
Just the way it should be
Erm this is Denton we are talking here. Its a shithole. It needs loads of investment but being Manchester its reliant on the tram for it so not much gonna happen. It is a bit of a no hope place to be honest, so no surprise that this attack happened. Make no mistake this was a sharpened letter knife concealed specially. Still a bunch of bleeding heart liberal wnakers though. All the kid really needs is a good slap.
