Seems a good option to me, although I am a bit puzzled about the power / torque output changing quite considerably over the production run seemingly.

I'd love a GTi but not really ready at the moment.

Was the 1.4TSI only in the GT or did it go in other cars in the range too?

Does it have issues/things to look for?

What sort of mpg can you get if you want to cruise steadily at 60?

It was initially offered in 140PS and 170PS power outputs for the Twincharged (Turbo and Supercharged) version. At launch the lower powered version came in Sport trim and the higher output version in GT trim. About a year later both trims were merged into a single GT Sport derivative offered with both engines. Around the same time they also introduced a turbo only version with 122PS, offered in S and Match trims.

Main specific things to watch with these seems to be gearbox problems and the timing chains are prone to failure. I'd only buy another if there was evidence it's had those things addressed in the past. You should also look out for general Golf Mk5 problems such as rust, AC compressor failure and ESP light permanently lit.

For MPG they'll do about 40 - 45 on a steady run, doesn't seem to be much between the 3 versions

If its the twincharger engine i would avoid it - too many horror stories of engine failures.

thanks for this, it does sound lot of tech in a relatively budget package, so I'm not surprised there are issues.

This is a third car (well, new second car so second car can be a third car) so although it can't be really dull, it does need to stay out of the garage and be cheap to keep going, otherwise I will just come to hate it.

As I can't stretch to a GTi, what Mk5 engine should I be going for, the other engines seem very lame!?

None of the other engines are much good IMO, the FSI petrols are asthmatic and diesels a bit loud and unrefined. The 1.4 TSI can be an Ok buy if you find one with a decent maintenance history or maybe even extended warranty. Otherwise I'd try and find something else in the VAG stable with the 2.0 TFSI from the GTI smile

I was quoted 750 € for replacement of timing chain (pre-emptively) on my wife's Golf VI 1.4 TSI. It is at 25.000 km but think there is a rattle that I don't like, so will go in for further inspection

yeah, the other engines look crap. Maybe a Leon FR then with 200bhp?
