My attention was brought the other day to the fact that America apparently randomly awards a few thousand green cards each year to applicants of a "lottery".
As someone who would love to live and work out here but has no family etc currently out here, my options up until now were to join a US company in the UK and work my way out (long and not guaranteed) or find a nice American girl to marry (even longer and less guaranteed)
Aaaaanyway, has anyone on here ever gained citizenship this way? Can anyone tell me more about it? I have researched it and the only official US Government page I can find on it simply states that applications for next year closed at the beginning of this year - not especially informative.

Send them the picture in your Stetson, I think there's a small quota for this purpose.

It's not just us. Most developed countries are excluded from the Diversity Lottery, as it was called last time I looked.

However, Irish citizens do get a very good deal.

I have a green card, although i took the 'Joining a US company and moving up' route.

Easiest way is to marry. This is second easiest.

The grass isn't always greener though.. Many downsides to being here over the UK.

Lots of misinformation in that link - must be ancient too - there are no visas for nurses and PTs anymore.

Aside from our forthcoming electoral choices, I can't think of many. What are the downsides?

This is actually quite easy.

Step 1 - approach us embassy.

Step 2 - show them this picture

Step 3 - point out that you and 5ohmustang have a lot in common.

They'll give you a card in a flash!

I thought at one point the OP eluded to being employed by Eli Lilly and Co - I do a lot of work for "The Colonel" and know that they sponsor a lot of L1 petitions for scientists, researchers, marketers etc. That would be his best route, assuming it wasn't BS and he could tolerate Indiana in the winter...
