CLK convertible vs E Class convertible
Discussion
As per the title looking for advice from Mercedes owners as to three difference and whether it's worth spending he extra for the newer E class. This will be a second car and budget up to £16k. Looking for a cruising convertible with 4 seats. Comfort more important than outright pace and edge of the seat handling
I'd go for the E Class. It's becoming a lot of car for the money. Price may start to soften further now the new shape saloon is out. I assume that the cab won't be far behind ?. Had a CLK briefly a few years back, but the quality wasn't a patch on my R129 SL. Have you thought about one of those?. They are pretty much all 2+2, and prices for good ones will only go up. Room in the back is no good for adults, but it's an awesome car.
Thanks for the suggestions and help. I think I will aim my research into the E class.
The early SL seems to offer a lot of car for the money but I'm not a classic car tinkerer..... I like to turn the key and go ! I also have the fear of it turning into a money pit ..... probably unjustified

I've just sold my CLK, I have problems extending my left leg so the 6 speed box was not ideal.
My car was low mileage and well cared for.
It was comfortable, roomy, easy to drive if you were not in a hurry but, if the mood takes you it could be driven with a lot of spirit. I could lean on mine in a corner more than with my current SLK.
It is underrated so is cheap for what you get.
Acres of space in the boot. A great GT with an astounding range of engines.
I thought the g'box quite smooth and not the disaster the road tests suggested.
I'm not sure why I did not buy an auto CLK other than I found a delightful SLK. My wife misses the boot space.
Mercedes auto boxes are sublime if you want to go that way.

THanks for taking the time to post your thoughts on the CLK. It's much appreciated. I'm already very much an auto box fan !!
Since my problem with extending my left leg, I fractured 3 vertebrae years ago, I've had auto boxes for my main car. Mercedes do it so well. I've driven Porsche auto and there's no comparison. The Mercedes 7-speed is sublime, the only irritation was a tendency to change up on a neutral throttle in the middle of a corner. No stability issues but unsettling. All I did was to go manual when pushing it a bit.
At the beginning I tried the flippers but with 7 gears I was always changing gear.
I don't know if I would go back to manual if I had a miracle cure.
I had major problems with the manual clutch on my Chimaera. In M25 traffic I was in a bit of pain so sat at an angle. This gave me cramp. I pulled onto the hard shoulder but my calf was knotted up. I laid on the road in front of my car and put my foot on the tyre to stretch the muscle. I was screwing my face in pain.
It must have looked odd but I assume no one phoned the police as I was there for a long time and no police or HA came.
Thank heavens for the torque of an RV8 engine.
The E Class convertible is the better car but engine options are limited with your budget of 16k, with the CLK you'll have a better choice of engines.

For you budget I'd say look for the 350 with nigh on 300bhp it should be quick enough but finding one will be hard you'll find a lot more 350 diesels than petrol one for sale, which is fine if you're doing over 12k.
E350cgi but with big miles

I'd spend a bit more & get this low mileage example.

Diesel version

Or if you can live with a Panoramic Sunroof instead of a fully folding one then this one is on budget.
