Police are reportedly solving 1 in 5 crimes. A police spokesperson said 'We are working on improving our detection rate'.

WHY??? ITS NOT LIKE YOURE SOLVING ALL THE ONES YOUVE GOT???????

shirley if they improve their detection rate then they will solve some of the remaining 80%? I don't see the problem here

But what is the profile of the crimes that they cant solve or clear up? I bet there are a large number of reported crimes, that if shown to the average man in the street, they would shrug their shoulders and say in agreement 'How in the hell are the bib supposed to do anything about that?'. I can think of several crimes that I could go out and commit, that would be reported, and the bib would be none the wiser. Mostly along the lines of shoplifting, burglary, car crime.
I can go outside right now and 'key' a neighbours car unseen. Just what are the bib supposed to do with crimes of this profile? They have no chance. The clear up rate figure does not surprise me, and what does it actually mean? We need to know more than the headline I think.

I agree its probably those sorts of crimes, but ill bet the BiBs would have a good idea of whose responsible and should be given greater freedom to go after them and the existing sentencing laws should be completely scrapped and new ones put in place by people who actually have some balls.

Now now boys nanny Blair knows best. The nice policepeople are all going to be put on ticking and stamping training courses so they can be really effective at meeting paperwork targets. In order to achieve crime clear up rate statistical improvements additional speed cameras will be fitted on roads and some new legislation will be passed to criminalise even more easy prey from among the general public. By legislating against wood effect floors, offensive t shirts, retail shopping and breathing. It is projected crime will rise by 8000% in the first 3 months of the next parliament. These new crimes of convenience will be much easier to clear up and so ensure clear up rates are smashing targets fit to bust a gut by Christmas. Also, lots more lolly in paid up fines and revenue to fund yet more quangos, dancing whores and friparies such as 5 star hotel suites for 2 jags. Vote Labour, Tory, Lib dem who cares they are all the same.

No. The obsession with the numbers causes various things :-

(a) use of scams to boost the figures
(b) Redefinition of "detection" and "crime" to suit.
(c) going for soft targets to boost the figures
(d) Police have vested interest & become prosecutors
(e) arse-covering en masse
(f) No pro-active policing or anything else that stops crime rather than detects it.
(g) Cops are judged on arbitrary measures rather than their quality as cops.
(h) Brings pressure to avoid discretion & go for simple clean hits.

etc etc etc.

This is not anti-Police ; Gone, Street, Mike etc.

These comments could apply (with minor variations) to just about every public sector worker.

And if anyone thinks this is OTT they should read up on ASBOs - the new system where you can make a crime up as you go along !

Are traffic offences included in these stats? I'm sure the vast majority of traffic offences are reported by the police/camera who stop the offender, thus having a 100% detection rate.

The majority of traffic offences are non recordable under crime recording standards, so only the most serious are recorded as part of the detection rates. Read my reply on another thread re how it works in brief.

Ah, but ASBOs are civil judgements, not criminal ones. So no crime at all really! How's that for making it up as you go along!!

Bugger the statistics if we decrimed stupidity by the general public at large we would reduce crime by about 60%....if I had £10 for every time a half witted muppet expressed extreme surprise the handbag/ mobile phone/expensively wrapped gift they put down in a nightclub/city centre/back seat of their car in full view went missing thanks to the great unwashed I'd have retired from this thankless task and bought a Griff. Nice one though Lanciachris at demonstrating the average man in the streets grasp of statistical analysis no doubt you'll be banging on that station door soon to report the loss of a phone/wallet/handbag/gift.......

Example of (possibly) how Police improve "solving" crime.......

House next door has been converted into a nursery. Cue every dumb b*tch in a 4x4 blocking my driveway every morning (we are on a clearway). Umpteen phone calls to plod - zip, nada, nothing, far call. I lose it one day and have a bit of a row with one of these brain dead, selfish morons and plod is there within ten minutes. Result - 1 "solved" crime.

Angry? - Me? - Not so you`d notice!
