t : Binge & Purge' 3cd set is fantastic, with a comprehensive selection of live versions of The first 10 years or so. It was originally only available as part of a box-set but not too long ago it was re-released as an album by itself. Master of the puppets is absolutly genius. That and few tracks from Justice for all..
The guitar solo in Sanatarium is a classic masterpiece. I had to buy all the albums to replace my aging CDs (abused from several parties thru the years with beer and scratches all over them)

I'd go for the Black album, from a production point of view, and some damn good songs.
Ride the Lighting and Puppets good old style metallica.
I wouldnt bother with there newest one however. I thought it was bl00dy awful. Like old men trying to play really fast songs...Dont go a bundle on the ape like bass player they have now either Im afraid. Apologies to any die hard fans... Just IMO obviously.

Master of Puppets is their best album, followed closely by And Justice For All, IMO.
But, I almost never listen to them anymore...their abandonment of metal and the shit they spew out today soured me on their music as a whole.
This is a band who declared metal dead, because Seattle grunge and alternative was the new thing. They all bought leather pants and silk shirts, and made horrible pop/rock music. Now that Nu metal is the rage, they try to pretend they always were metal, and release the piece of shit St. Anger.
Sorry, James, but when you record the entire album with the assistance of a group therapist to help the band deal with their inner pain (apparently cause by being millionaire sellouts), you look like a geezer douchebag when you try and sing about rage and angst.
Next time he and Lars have each others johnsons down each other's throats, I hope they both choke.

If you want to buy true metal-god-status music, go with Slayer. They did more to influence today's generation of metallers than Metallica did, they never sold out, and they are simply BETTER.

Decade of Agression is definitely a must have.
However they have not been really creative between Divine Intervention and Diabolus in Musica, they have even been repeating themselves annoyingly, IMO.
How does God hates us all compare with these two ?

Megadeth have always been very 'metal'
Do what I did.
First, get 'Ride The Lightning' and 'Master Of Puppets'. You'll love them - every track is nigh-on perfect, they are the 'joint best' Metallica albums.
Then, go into Music Zone and get both Kill 'Em All and '...And Justice For All'.
These will divide your opinions. If you like their very first effort, Kill Em All, better, then get yourself some Megadeth (the band Dave Mustaine formed after leaving Metallica after KEA) as it's more like that sort of thing.
If you like ...And Justice For All better then keep buying Metallica albums, but be prepared for them to get progressively less 'tight'-sounding, more 'grunge', then more 'nu' metal. 'St Anger' is something of a return to form, but still nowhere near as good as Ride The Lightning or Master Of Puppets.
