A's great grandmother and B's grandfather were brother and sister. What relation is A to B. I guess it's some kind of cousin once removed (as they are a generation apart) but is it 1st or 2nd cousin etc?

I would go great uncle/great aunt?

or second cousins once removed?

A tricky one. Too many people have too many different interpretations of what constitutes first/second cousins etc.

My fifth-cousin-once-removed is famous actor Tom Hanks. Never sent me a birthday or Christmas card...

You're thinking about the situation where A's father and A's uncle are the same person.

I used to know two girls who were cousins but only had 4 grandparents between them.

Yes, double cousins is apparently the term.

It is close to happening to some chaps I know - one of them has just got married, and his younger brother is looking to me to be on course to proposing to her sister. Which is nice.

That sounds pretty authoritative. I don't doubt you're right but can you explain to me the mechanics of how you arrived at that.

The once removed is because they are one generation apart.

A's great-gran and B's granddad are siblings. So their kids - A's grandparent and B's parent - are cousins. THEIR kids, A's parent and B themself, are second cousins. Then once removed because A is one generation younger.

^ What they said.

I did quite a bit of work on my family tree a couple of years back and became quite familiar with all the lineage stuff.
