I'm thinking about stripping down the throttle bodies, cleaning everything fully and epoxy powider coating the castings.

Not having done this before I was wondering if anyone has tackled this themselves and if it was relatively straightforward? Obviously making sure that the same liners go back with the same plates etc.

Thanks

I wouldn't advise powder coating your throttle bodies. I have discussed this at length with two companies and both were reluctant to do it. There will be 'edges'on the coating ie where the linkages mount and the line between the inside and outside where the inside is not coated and the outside is. Fuel and oil will eventually get under these edges and lift the coating off. When it starts it will peel off quite rapidly. My personal favourite is soda or vapor blasting though I've seen some good results from painting. Don't ask me the paint type though, I've never done it myself.

I have also considered a two pack paint which might be more appropriate.

Just doing this exact thing on .one at the moment, going to use high heat matte black engine paint.3 coats recommended.also found glass beads work better than paint stripper...

Is the painting just for aesthetics?

If so, how about soda blasting the castings then treating with ACF50?

Soda wasn't man enough to get through the coating, had to use glass beads. This it's just for looks

ACF50 will help stop the crud building up and stop it oxidising.

Vapour blasting with glass beads does seem to be the way to go.

How far did you have to strip down your bodies?

I only do the Speed 6 ones not the V8s.
When I have customers bodies soda or vapour blasted I usually give them a light sand blast first. As stated above this gets rid of any heavy muck/corrosion/paint and I find it gives a more even final finish. I also sand blast the linkages before having them re plated as this gives better adhesion and a more even shiny finish to them.

Stripped them down completely just because I didn't want any chance of leaving any deposits anywhere ,will be reconstructing this week so will post some pics.

Took a look at mine on Sunday. It looks as though a monkey has tried to take them apart in the past, hex caps rounded and the aluminium slotted screws on the throttle plates mangled. After cutting slots in the hex caps to remove the bolts only to find the liners well and truly stuck I decided to leave it be and send them off to those that have the tooling to get the job done with minimal swearing.

On to the next job.

Took my car to Warren for a Geo setup earlier in the year. Although it's now slightly lower than I'd like, it is far more stable than before, much much more relaxing to drive.

The car was filthy when I dropped it off, including a lot of soot that had become embedded within the paintwork where I'd had a fuel spill (note to self - worth checking that you have replaced the filler cap before driving off).

When I picked it up it had never been so clean, and I know from past experience that cleaning that up is not a trivial job.

Do I care what the throttle bodies look like - probably not, you can't even see them on a fully dressed engine.
