Ok, so a bit more web surfing has given me the answer on oil spec, and it seems that the oil is the same whether the diff is a Hydratrak or not. However, I'd still be interested in how to find out if my car's fitted with a Hydratrak. I suppose I could boot it up a straight bit of road and see how it behaves but there must surely be a way to identify the unit... or not?

I think your second comment is nearer the mark, the thread leaves me (and those posting it seems) no clearer than before. But thanks anyway ESDavey said:
Just out of interest, why do you care ? (BTW, what the answer to the oil question please ?)
Now that I know that the same oil can be used whether the diff is a Hydratrak or not, I don't need to know but, having asked the question, I'd quite like to know the answer. I'll try contacting the original owner, but what are the chances of him being at the same address as in 1998?!
