Phone cradle sort of thing.

Not sure whether it's the basis for one of the BMW 'snap-in adapters' for whatever phone you have or if something's meant to fit in there directly.

Not sure how old your car is but I suppose smartphone technology has changed a bit in the last few years. I have something very similar in my 55 plate which predates the first iPhone by a year or two. I never use mine, either - without a snap-in adapter (this sort of thing: http://www.leebmann24.de/bmw-snap-in-adapter-conne... ) it makes a good sized-shelf for my phone.

I guess the cradle connection was meant as some kind of charging/basic address book connectivity in the days before bluetooth was as common as it is.

Yes, it's for a phone specific snap in adapter. Great for recharging your phone on the go and I believe for increased connectivity with the shark fin aerial.
