Hi all,

do you have any experience with W210 E-Class Mercs? I live in central Europe and there are some really nice cars in Germany for very reasonable prices (much cheaper than similar E39s and in better condition - I know that E39 is much sharper and possibly better car all in all).
Mostly interested in 280 and 320 petrols.
What are main issues except rust (which is notorious I know)?
Is 320 better option than 280? Also, how about gearboxes? I know they made 280 with manual...
I am very tall person, so I really like how spacious W210 is inside..
Cheers for any tips!

I have owned W210 320 and 280's for a few years. As you said, rust is the main problem, although BM's of that age also rust.
The engines are virtually bulletproof and the 5 speed auto seems generally stronger than the newer 7 speed as long as you keep on top of the filter and fluid services. Don't believe the sealed for life rubbish
Examine the body very carefully. I bought a 320 about 18 months ago with a full mot. When I started to take things apart, it was a complete basket case. It was good for parts for my current 280 though. Try to get one with leather, comand etc.
My current car has only done 59k but I can't drive it due to health problems.

Many thanks for your answer! Your car looks very good, esp. on those AMG wheels!
I have to make up my mind whether to chose E39 or W210. Just last few weeks searching the internet, I realized that it's actually much easier to find nice(ish) W210 than the beemer (most of them are completely knackered)..
