Remember that in our cuddly, environmentally friendly world over the last 20 years dredgers have been banned by the EA from our shores.
The sediment hasn't stopped forming/moving (and as the predicted sea level rise doesn't seem to have happened yet) dredging will be needed in most harbours in the near future.
AFAIK the two carriers under construction are the largest we have ever deployed so it stands to reason that they might need greater draft than previous craft especially the last range of mini carriers.

Civilians do an arcane calculation of the volume of the various parts of the ship and then give it a name that sounds like a measure of weight.
QE2 actually displaces around 49,000 tonnes, less than the Titanic.
Freight vessels can be even more annoying as oil tankers just quote the weight of the cargo. The heaviest oil tankers were, 560,000 tonnes of oil and 80,000 tonnes of steel, hence actually not that much more steel than the CVF.

Slightly off topic, dhy do they 'weigh' the civilian ships and boats by the volume. My father has got an old Fairline Corniche 31 and it has got a plaque in the cockpit than says '10 3/4 tons', but it only displaces about 6. Is it an old hang on from the old days when ships carried barrels and bags? Or is it more a old taxation/license type thing.

Port fees are calculated by tonnage, as a measure of volume it probably correlates with the actual space the vessel will take up better than displacement.Storer said:

If you know the water temperature and chemistry you can calculate one from the other. Either way both relate to each other more accurately than tonnage does to anything because it is a dimensionless numberStorer said:

As stated earlier neither are related to tonnage, which is calculated primarily on cargo or passenger volume
