Disney Infinity - a bit confused!

My son has enjoyed playing Toy Story 3 and has mentioned Disney Infinity which he found on YouTube.

I am a bit baffled by it so would appreciate some help.

Is Infinity 1.0, 2.0 , 3.0 etc a different type of game / universe? Is one set in Marvel, one in traditional Disney, one in Star Wars etc?

The different characters available - do they unlock different game styles / levels and are they compatible across the range?

It is now an obsolete system so I wouldn't recommend buying into the system, you still have skylanders and Lego dimensions (which looks very tempting to me)
