Hi chaps.
I have a small leak coming from the seal nearest the steering arm if that makes sense.
Is it possible to just replace that seal or is it worth getting the rack reworked? I'm not looking to replace everything with the Subaru kit.

Which side?

Drivers of passengers?

If its leaking from teh drivers side, there are 2 seals it could be. If its the passengers there is only 1 seal, and is much easier to get to as you can do it in situ.

If its the drivers side, the rack will have to come out to have it done, I attempted to do the pinion seals in situ on a car the other week, and its just not feasible. Much easier to drop the rack.

It's the passenger side, where can I get the seals if I do it myself?

the seals are just standard lip seals from any bearing/seal seller, i ahev a useful local chap.

From Memory, the seals for the rack shaft are 39x24x9 single sprung lip seal. They are they same both sides of the shaft but of course you only need one.

An odd size, but available. Do double check your size. Unscrew the Tie rod and remove the circlip and retaining washer, prise out seal and check. If you can't prise it out , then remove the whole collar from the end of the rack with a large pair of stilsons or the like (it will be EXTREMELY tight, but doesn't actually need to be when replaced!). Mind the fluid....

Cheers,

Jody
