People often debate who was the first comedian to break away from the traditional club "stand-up" / "mother in law" joke mould. Often Billy Connolly is put forward as the prototype. I'd suggest that it was Dave Allen.

Years ahead of his time.

Oh no, he was one of my favourite comics.

Caused controversy late in his career by using the F word before the watershed.

Chap gets up 8am every morning and goes to work. Works all day until 5pm does this every day for 40 years, ruled by his office timings.

He retires, what do they give him as a present?

A watch!

RIP Dave, you'll be missed.

Thats two comedy gods in as many months...

Shame. Dad and I used to watch him every week.

Those "pope" sketches were superb. Anyone remember the "spare wheel" one? Comedy genius!

RIP Dave.

"Don't mourn for me now
Don't mourn for me never
I'm going to do nothing
For ever and ever."

Are the words he wanted inscribed on his own Tombstone.

RIP Dave.

Apologies for the previous poor spelling.

BBC news said:
Comedian Dave Allen dies aged 68 Irish comedian Dave Allen, famed for his TV routines delivered as he sat on a stool, has died in his sleep aged 68.
He was most famous for his dry-humoured TV shows Tonight With Dave Allen and Dave Allen at Large.
Allen got his first break on a BBC talent show in 1959, and toured with the Beatles in the UK and France.
His agent said he died in his sleep on Thursday night, having been suffering from an illness.

Arse. One of my favourite comedians.

Incidentally, if you ever laughed at his funeral sketches, your hair would stand on end if you knew how close to the truth some of them were...

;( That is a real shame, I thought he was great, one of the few comedians that could reduce me to tears of laughter.

sorry didnt see this topic (not helped by title and by search facility disabled).

Great man, the world could learn so much from his observations.

"Thanks for listening,May your god be with you," RIP

I remember when I was only about 10, I was allowed to watch one of his shows. Most of it went over my head, except one little sketch. A girl is going off to school and says to her Dad (Dave) "bye", "Wave" so Dave waves back, "no, Wave see said" so he did again....then a bloddy great big wave comes through the door - probably had to be there

I worked in a Bank in the 80's and he was a great guy, often bought us drinks from the local when we were working through our lunch.

He gave me a bible when my first daughter was born, a lovely, lovely man.
