Does engine oil expand when hot ?
I usually check the oil level on my Db9 when the engine is cold and parked on level ground. I checked a few weeks ago and the level was between the 2 marks so I topped it up to the top mark.Always prefer to keep it that way due to the horror stories re oil starvation.
Today I checked the oil again but this time the engine was at operating temp and the oil level was above the top mark, hence my question does it expand when hot.

It can do either. If there's water in it (often because the car is only driven on short trips), then the water will boil out when it reaches temp and the volume of the oil will decrease.
If it's completely dry (i.e: you live in a desert or the car was driven more than 20 miles in the last few days), then it will expand a bit, but only by a couple of percent.
Cheers,
Jeff.
