Forza 6 revisited
Discussion
For anyone that’s interested, here are my latest Thrustmaster Tx wheel settings for when playing Forza 6.
I bought this game when it first came out but lost interest in it as I couldn’t get the wheel steering and FFB to feel realistic and I was also experiencing the FFB bug where the wheel would pull strongly to the left during braking.
Being on holiday at the moment I thought I would give this game another go as I was interested in the Porsche and Nascar expansion packs.
Firstly I looked around on the internet to find out what settings others were using. During this research I discovered that the Thrustmaster Tx, when used with the latest f/w, has adjustable steering sensitivity, which is a feature I didn’t know it had.
So with the wheel connected to the Pc, I downloaded and installed the latest driver and f/w.
I then connected the wheel back to the XB1 (it’s important to press both pedals as it initialises to calibrate them) and tested that both adjustments worked;
D-pad + Mode button changes the DOR – I set it to 360° which = 2 green flashes.
Shift paddle + Mode button changes the steering sensitivity – I set it to 2 green flashes which = medium.
In the game/options/controller settings I have Rumble on and in the advanced settings I use;
Steering deadzone inside = 1
Steering deadzone outside = 95
Vibration = 5
FFB = 100
DOR =420
I am using ‘Normal’ steering and driving aid ‘STM’
I have found all of the above to be a revelation to how the cars drive and feel through the wheel.
Also, these settings seem to work well across a broad spectrum of cars (from street to race) without having to change anything.
Another thing that initially put me off the game was the race starts, especially with race cars, where the car would sometimes bog down with zero revs and everyone else would leave you standing, putting you at a severe disadvantage in the race straight away.
I use manual with clutch and my interpretation was that the car would first be in neutral and that during the countdown phase I had to press the gearshift to select first gear.
Now I don't select first gear (the game seems to do this automatically) and just depress the accelerator for maximum revs during the countdown phase and then modulate it for good traction after the car launches - result is a perfect start every time.
So far I’ve been playing the Porsche expansion, which I can highly recommend. There is a wide variety of cars, which do all feel different to drive and do respond well to setup changes.
My favourite so far is the 911GT3RSR which comes out of the box with a good default setup, to which I made some minor suspension adjustments. This car is such great fun to drive and I can feel exactly what it is doing under braking and through the corners.
I’ve spent about 10 hours so far with these new wheel settings, including a 36 lap endurance race, and there has been no re-occurrence of the FFB bug.
To summarize, IMO Forza 6 is a really good game and fun to play and the cars do handle realistically once the wheel has been setup properly. I think a lot of people initially dissed this game and the car handling and FFB because of poor wheel settings.
I'm now looking forward to FH3 and would like to play it on the Pc but I'm reluctant to upgrade from W7 to W10 because of the auto updates and driver issues.
Is W10 now a good reliable OS to use for gaming and have all of the issues been sorted?
