Bags work out about 10p each depending on size, and yes it will extend the shelf life of food although this is dependant on a number of factors, ie. food type, how its stored etc etc
One thing to note is that all the home machines struggle with anything containing liquids as this gets drawn into the area of the bag that seals (or doesn't if it has moisture on it).
Makes packing curries or sauce based meals a bit of a mission, ie, freeze in blocks before packing.

I think a lot of people are now using the zip lock bags and using water to expel the air.
