If you haven't heard of Skepta or aren't aware of his influence, then it shows how out of touch you are with the music world.

I know one of his singles but he's no different from all the other rappers out there.

Traditionally the Mercury has been about giving newer, more niche artist a bit of a leg up to a wider audience and lifting album sales of more 'indepedant' labels/artists.

Bowie should not really have even been nominated, and someone like Skepta is much more in line with the ethos of the whole process IMO.

Irrespective of how good Blackstar is, who do you think David Bowie would have liked the award to go to ?

He has been nominated for/won things while he was 'living',you are aware of that??
I think Bowie himself,as Jarvis Cocker himself said,he would have probably approved of giving the award to an up and coming artist rather than himself,i just question it being 'that' artist?

Personally i thought it was an uninspriring final list overall,even Radiohead,who i like seemed quite dire.It think he would have struggled to pick one.

Honestly, Skeptas album wasn't even the best Grime album on this list (Kano - 'Made in the Manor' is seriously good) but as a DIY musician whos attitudes and ethos are more "Punk" than half the guitar based bands out there nowadays who act that way but hide behind great PR etc. and the effect he's had on his demographic and wider, it's harsh to describe him as just another rapper
