I now get some pops and bangs on both idle and less so higher up the revs at road speeds. Never done this before.

It doesn't appear to miss fire, engine seems just as smooth. Just don't know why its started now.

Any pointers?

The car is full de-cat with the Clive Y piece, been like this for the last couple of years.

Bad spark plug? Or all of them bad.

Weak spark

Bad fuel?

Timing out / advanced / retarded too much?

What RPM does it settle at?

Mine produced noticeably more when one of my lambdas had gone!

Have you developed an exhaust leak?

Mine was shooting flames out of the rear on rapid lift-off the gas at 6000 rpm in second......but was also failing track day noise tests.
A change of exhaust later and it was no longer failing noise tests, but the really loud pops had gone.

Now I noticed I was getting pretty good back fires on deceleration on a sprint day yesterday, but I also suspect I had a slight misfire.

So, having had good pops and bangs from my car, and lots of miles covered, I would say that if you are getting more than expected you either have a misfire or a dodgy exhaust. It's worthy of note that a Chim runs happily on 7 cylinders, but the unburnt fuel from the eighth gives good pops and bangs.

Which part of the Midlands are you in? I am in Newark, but driving to Oulton Park and back tomorrow (Mansfield, Chesterfield, Buxton etc), so if you mean north Notts, Derbyshire, Staffs I am happy to pop in and see if I can diagnose a misfire.

QBee thanks for the kind offer, but I am Birmingham side. I did read one of your previous post with exhaust temperature and a plastic zip tie.

I was already planning to get rid of the plug extenders (looking very rusty), use heat socks and swap to Resistor plugs. I have done this but sill got the same problem.

Changed HT leads, Coil and amp still the same.

Changed to spare Distributor cap and rotor still the same.

I used a HT lead spark tester this showed the leads to be working on all cylinders.

I did the zip tie test on the exhaust manifolds RH bank cylinder 6 and 8 did not melt.

I think I have gone through all the HT / Ignition components. I am running out of talent now and will need to phone the local TVR specialist.

Pull all the plugs and see what's going on
