Channel 5: The Cars that made Britain Great

Anyone watched last nights The Cars that made Britain Great on Channel 5?. The E-Type was mentioned as usual (as of course it should be) and the Capri, Lotus Europa (yes an ugly car), etc. Didn't know Martin Kemp and John Prescott once owned an E-Type, unless I heard it wrong.
Speaking of E-Types, but I noticed they showed a number of period film clips, presumably taken in the 60s and 70s which I have never seen before. There was the familiar shot of the roadster heading along the motorway, as well as the FHC heading out of the Browns Lane factory gates, and the shot of the series 3 2+2 driving down a lane towards what looks like a castle or manor house of some kind, but there were some shots I hadn't seen before. Anyone know were this footage can be found?.

Decent show, but I hate it when some people describe the E-Type has phallic looking and all that. Complete idiots who talk like that. The E-Type, IMO, will always be better than the likes of the overrated rubbish like the Capri and Escort. If it wasn't for a certain 1970s TV series, the Capri would've been long forgotten about and never had the boy racer fandom it has had since. Same goes for the Delorean. People seem to want those cars because they had posters of those cars on their bedroom walls as youngsters and dreamed of owning one so they could imitate their on-screen heroes.

It goes without saying the e-type will always overshadow a Ford Capri or Escort even in these over inflated Ford times, they were never comparable then or now.Edited by anonymous-user on Saturday 17th September 11:06
Don't forget for many years after the Capri was discontinued it was seen as a naff car hence Delboy getting one which Rodney referred to as a Crapmobile.
It was all pretty asinine. Dom Jolly and Jodie Kidd were awful.
Nevertheless, some of the footage was actually more interesting than they gave credit for, like the two Geneva E-Types 9600 HP and 77 RW driving out of the gates. And what was with all those wedge Lagondas behind Julia Bradbury? I assume that some dealer has been hoovering them up. Ford's Dagenham collection has also been getting a good airing recently too.

I tried to watch the first cars one but Christ almighty, who the hell gives a damn what Martin Kemp, Phil Tuffnel, Domonic Littlewood and that football bloke who spends ages talking at half speed about nothing, think about cars? Derivative, content-lite, advertisement heavy channel 5 rubbish. I ended up reading PH forums. That's right PHers, I value the content you generate higher than the opinions of aforementioned nobodies.

At the time the E-type was launched British advertising was becoming 'sexual' in an early 60's way !! And the Phallic reference was used regularly , there was also a newspaper and poster ad for Petrol which showed a girl holding a Petrol Pump nosel in a most suggestive way that caused a lot of unrest on the 7.40 Reigate to Waterloo train ! I watched the first episode which was mildly amusing, the other episodes are just taking space up on my Sky Q box.

earlier in the thread , Fords that you couldn't give away 10 years ago are ludicrously priced now, even the humble mk5 cortina prices are on the rise.
If only I kept hold of all my fords of which I have had plenty, I would make some serious cash

h Well despite what others are saying, its still a car program, and its not like there a load of them on to watch these days, what with all the reality X factor sing off dance off rubbish.
Watch it and make your own mind up, i didn't think it was bad, and nice to see some of the older footage.
Everyone is too critical, with cars being looked upon as anti-social theres a wonder any car programs are shown at all, enjoy them whilst they last.
P.S New Wheeler dealers 14th Nov (which i rather enjoy) again not everyone does but its a car program so beats soaps and reality rubbish.

It amazes me how VBH can slate the way an Etype drives and rave about the drive of a DB5 when it's well documented that the E drove far superior as it should being a later car
I can only assume the E she drove was hanging apart. A well fettled E is simply amazing to drive and that's forgetting it's over 50 yrs old
