You're all missing the point the speedlimits aren't designed for people who can actually drive and have a modicum of capacity and awareness. They are for the other 99.9% of idiots out there on the road...4x4 driving school run mothers...old gimmers in flat caps and middle aged women whose technological ability peaked with understanding how an iron works. Sadly it's f**kwits like this that are put on the roads to test the mental agility of anyone with a decent car. The single biggest problem is a complete lack of understanding of closing speed and an inability to see beyong the end of the bonnet...always assume the idiots are out to get you and you won't go far wrong.

DVD -

The number of driving licences in UK is approximately 40 million. 0.1% is 40 thousand - you must be a prolific form filler-in .

Alternatively, the number of registered vehicles in UK is approximately 30 million - 0.1% is 30 thousand - that's a lot of vehicles parked on your drive .

Re lady penelope I totally agree, the problem is that there are people who are just not 'designed' to drive - years ago these type of people would just not have bothered or had a few lessons and decided not to continue, but these days you are considered a 'freak' if you don't drive.
When I say 'designed' to drive we have done alot of work in the school I work at with left and right brain, auditory, kinesthetic and visiual learners, and looking at the results you start to wonder if there are groups are people that are now pressured into driving that really aren't safe on a pushbike. Extreme right brain thinkers have little or no logic at all.

Oakky couldn't agree more. If you want empirical evidence just watch the next gossiping woman or old age gimmer pull away on a 2 lane roundabout and cut straight into the centre of both lanes... lack of spatial awareness coupled with total lack of ability...OK jaundiced opinion I know; think you must be right about the rest though.

DVD as for where it leaves me... I would thing about 2 miles ahead of you with you eating the Cerbera's exhaust fumes...

Actually in a Darwinian sense I suspect that NONE of the human race is actually designed to drive.

Some as pointed out have brains which are linked up in a better way than others, in the same way that some people are better at kicking a football than others.

Equally some people have a good singing voice, some become better with training, and others (including yours truly) couldn't hit a true note with a 9mm Browning held to the right temple.

The ability to control a mechanically propelled vehicle is no different. As delivered by mother nature we don't know how to do it at all, let alone in any competent fashion. It has to be taught.

Therefore the key surely is to have competent and continuous(?) training with, dare I say it, retesting at intervals.

Yes I hear all the anti retest fraternity going on about resources, the anxiety of retests, how some drivers will drive to pass a test and then revert immediately and so on.

Knowing that you have a retest coming up in the next 1/2/3 years doesn't stop all the bad habits from reasserting themselves but sure as hell it keeps you on the straight and narrow.

So as discussed before we need a carrot to make people undergo further training, and for those that won't unfortunately there will probably have to be a stick.

You going to allow me in your 0.1% DVD?

Agreed, however commonsense must be a major factor in ability to drive. getting back to the 4x4 mums, driving to my school I come across Mums that are opening the car door thats roadside for their children to get out of the car! Or the new Mum thats parked her car in the street outside her house so that the car seat she's lovingly fitted for her baby can only be reached via the road, a bit of forward planning and she could have put her baby in the car in safety -saw her on my way to work.

Forsooth faire sire DVD I spake mearly in jest, let not my humourous bantering asides be considered a stain upon thy manly counternance even though my carriage burneth you off in the merest trickling of seconds. Sire Streaky is indeed a most noble defender I fair swoon at his discourse.

Felicitations, Lady P..
