Can DPF filter on an Audi Q7 3.0TDI 63reg handle short runs?
Discussion
Looking to run a Q7 which will be used for shorter runs of 3miles during the week on a commute and then longer runs at weeekends. Will be approx 2 miles of dual carriage way (no traffic jams) and 1mile of town driving daily. My concern is whether the DPF filter will be able to handle the short runs with only 1 or 2 longer runs to clear it out weekly. We already have the Q7 with just a change in planned usage required so. Any feedback & advice welcome.
It will depend on how quickly the ash loading increases with your new typical weekly usage. If you have VCDS you could identify the loading on the DPF now and compare to what you're getting after a couple of weeks commuting use.
I'd expect it to be OK given DPFs have been around a fair while and the re-gen strategy should be able to cope.
If you can feel the engine is more laboured/sounds different/idles higher when you get to your destination and you think it might be mid re-gen then let it idle until it's finished so you don't end up with failed re-gens. Incomplete re-gens on a regular basis will cause issues - if you start to experience running issues then clearly it'll be time for a re-think on using it for that type of journey. It's still quite difficult to get a non-diesel vehicle in that class....

why on earth would you use a diesel for this type of driving?
Through choice, you really wouldn't - although plenty of SUVs appear diesel only, which limits the choice somewhat....short journeys in a big capacity diesel = expensive breakage
short journeys in a big capacity diesel SUV = very expensive breakage
short journeys in a big capacity 'premium' diesel SUV = .... you get the idea
i mean it's basically the worst possible car to be be clogging up.... why not just get a petrol one... there's even a Q7 3.0 supercharged of that era?
You'll be absolutely fine; that's a fairly young car with quite reliable emissions systems. In my experience (have sold dozens and hear feedback from owners) they give little grief.
As a bit of 'preventative maintenance' take it on a longer, faster run once in a while and don't be afraid of driving it hard.
Large, heavy cars suit diesel engines well. This is why most people want them.

no, what you mean is diesels are more common in large heavy cars because they cost marginally less in fuel.As a bit of 'preventative maintenance' take it on a longer, faster run once in a while and don't be afraid of driving it hard.

I do? As it goes the 3.0 TDI is better suited to the job than the 3.0 TFSI (and the 4.2 before it). I base that opinion on experience. There is nothing wrong with preferring a petrol engine of course. I was simply attempting to answer the OP's question.

Well i have an older 2009 3.0 tdi in an Allroad which its regular commute is less than 2 miles on a cold engine daily - not ideal but i've never had a DPF issue, however, i do annually run through some DPF cleaner and try to take it on a spirited drive weekly or sometimes fortnightly as its not my only car its use can be less than intended but never had a DPF issue in 3 years even a warning light.

Thanks for this, will be giving it a go to see how it runs. Fortunately I have to do a 25mile round trip every 2 weeks so will do some Italian Tuning to clean out the cobwebs. Wasnt aware of DPF cleaner but will definately take that advice and run it through annually. Time will tell......Indymalc said:
