170ps EA189 vs 150ps EA288
Discussion
My 2015 Yeti has the 170ps version of the (in)famous EA189 engine. It's been involved in a no-fault accident and due to the circumstances is being held as forensic evidence pending trial. The Police can't let me know how long it'll be held for but the inference is it could be many months as it might need to wait until all trials and inquests are completed.
My insurance company have suggested that due to the extended time it might take (worst case is it could be years) it might be possible to have it written off and replaced with a new car. The only problem with this is that the new one only comes with a 150ps engine, presumably EA288?
It's a lease so I have no concern for the car's value, but 20-odd horsepower isn't to be sniffed at at these relatively low totals so I was wondering how they might compare?
Is there as much of a difference as the headline figures might suggest? Or is the newer engine more capable and the top-end loss not as noticeable?
For reference I've had a 140ps PD engine before and felt that the 170ps CR was far more willing and much less peaky, a real noticeable difference.

My missus has the 150PS EA288 in a Tiguan DSG and it feels fine to me (my own car is a C270CDi auto Merc).
To be honest, it never occurred to me to look at the 184 version and I was a bit miffed about it afterwards, but the Tiguan owners forum, where most seem to have the higher power versions, says there's little everyday difference.

Old 2.0 TDI with 170bhp is 8.1 (0-60) and 125mph, against new 2.0TDI with 150 bhp at 9.1 and 119mph....neither are swift.
Yeah, I see the figures and they would suggest that there is a big gap in performance, but there's a lot that can affect crude metrics like 0-60 so I'm trying to find out how that translates into real day-to-day driving.g7jhp said:

There Is Always A Quicker Car® so yes, I don't see anyone claiming they are fast cars, but the 170 version's stats are broadly comparable to a Mk2 Golf GTI 16v so it's not as if we're talking milk float performance.g7jhp said:
Obviously you could remap for extra performance.

What's the difference in the torque figures? That'll dictate more about how it feels.

I think the headline is only 10Nm less for the 150ps. As per usual with VW they just quote that over a range like 1500-3500.Does the top-end matter much - how often did you drive the Yeti using 100% of its performance?
As for foot to the floor stuff, probably more than I should. It's got an...erm, very soft spring on the accelerator pedal, ossifer...

I averaged about 34mpg over 15,000 miles if that tells you anything.
