NATIONAL SERVICE
Discussion
Go for it if you want to. From family and friends that are in the army it can be a bit depressing because some of them are scum. It depends what your going in as and what you specialise in. The travel can be great but some find staying in contact with friends and relationship difficult. Really depends on your personality whether you are suitable for it and you may become "armytized".
No reason why the laydees should be spared, but military skills are only needed by the military so...
Better than national service maybe wold be to take all our youf, at about 12 when the hormones and attitides are kicking in, and make them carry out menial tasks for the community on the minimum wage - tasks such as litter picking, graffiti removal, shopping for the elderly, clearing out urban waterways and so on, under the supervision of those normally responsible for these jobs. Noble stuff but not exciting in the i-pod or gameboy way, and hopefully a bit of an eye opener.
Keep them at it until the age of 16, when they would be free to return to education or continue in their 'job'. My guess would be that there would be a rapid re-evaluation of the benefits from education and training by these folk, with better understanding of some of life's realities as well.

I wouldn't object to national service even though I would no doubt have to do it. I have often read suggestions that people within a certain age range (say 18-30) who are unemployed for more than a certain amount of a time (say 6 months, or maybe a year) should have to do national service. Would certainly solve the problem of professional dole collectors.

I always think this is a haorey old debate. What is the point of putting feckless, moronic , useless individuals into military service? I certainly wouldn't like to think people with that frame of mind were being tasked with defending me or my family.
At the moment the military is actually being cut back, not being expanded. I'd much prefer the military to be maintained at a proper level and manned with individuals who are committed, determined and fit for the job.

I loved every minute of my time in the Services.
OK, I was a volunteer, but IMHO it is a superb lifestyle for a young single bloke.
Currently it is crap for wives/kids because of active duty commitments.
There a plenty of training opportunities which are relevant to civilian life as well, all of it provided whilst you are being paid.

Eric ,
Take it from me , you can put a feckless moronic individual in to HM forces and they can turn their lives around ( I should know, I was one , and this is no fault of my parents)
I got the best engineering training available , and a huge amount moral training which imbued me with certain standards to which I adhere today , I certainly would not have the lifestyle I have now without it .

Nah we stopped doing that. The public school drop outs go into the national trust and Quangos now. Most Officers are now degree men.

I did cadet force stuff at school and that was probably about all I could stand, but it was pretty good fun.
Yep, at least you learn how to walk upright, unlike the shambling apes
Edited to add: Mind you, defending the school grounds with a .303 Lee Enfield and ONE blank round was always going to be tricky!
We also had a 25 yard indoor rifle range for .22 rifles. Great fun but of course far too dangerous for the kids of today eh

IMO some kind of National Service might be useful for 'directionless' school leavers. Put it this way - if, say you left school at 16, then the choices would be 6th Form College, an Apprenticeship/OTJ training, or National Service. School's all very well but the lessons learned are by and large theoretical - the concept of National Service doesn't have to be solely a military one - so perhaps from the ages of 16-18, those not in colleges or apprenticeships could learn practical skills in a structured context, and perhaps get paid for it. This could include basic structural maintainance projects on public buildings, voluntary work, charity work and learning how to care for kids and the elderly, as well as traditional army-based stuff.
Also, 'boot camps' have been proved to turn layabout chavs around. Some kind of hard-nosed variant of NS should be available for this purpose.

I'm 21 and would not mind doing it, we live in a very dangerous world and can NEVER be complacent as well as the fact the discipline would be good. What do all of you think, women would not do it as young males are usually the problem with society . Oh well what do you think.
Why don't you join the armed forces. You can have an excellent career for 22yrs.
I loved every minute of forces life.

We had a range too. Those enfields were at least more reliable than the sodding cadet GPs which seized as soon as the humidity went up.
We also got to play with fully automatics on the range, had a couple of overnight 'operations', did assault courses (so much harder than they look!) and a week long camp at a base I think was in Ashford.
They never taught me to stand up properly straight though! Trying to correct that even these days...
Hilts - hmmm who could you mean?

If I were you I would join the Royal Marines. Fantastic mates, good but hard training, and a sense of achievement.
Just mention the bottom fields at lympstone.
