These Max Power twats who think the road is their playground give us a bad name and make it all the more straightforward for the press to demonise motorists as a whole.
The right to drive a car is going to become like the right the bear arms in the US. The vegetablists will assert that you might kill people so it shouldn't be allowed. The libertarians will screan blue murder and the motoring lobby (ie GM, Ford etc) will buy and sell politicians to keep itself in the marketplace.

Motorcycle WPC thrown to death by 'road race car'
A WOMAN police officer was killed and her husband severely injured when their motorcycle was hit head-on by a sports car believed to have been racing another vehicle.
Lorna Green, 33, was returning home to Guildford on Friday with her husband, Robert, 36, on his 1100cc Suzuki motorcycle. They had been at an athletics meeting at Crystal Palace, South London.
The couple, who had married a few months ago, were riding along Croydon Road in Mitcham, Surrey, at about 11pm when the motorcycle was struck by a high-powered Volkswagen Golf GTi, which was travelling at high speed in the opposite direction.
It is thought that the car was overtaking another Golf GTi when the accident took place, and that both cars reached speeds of about 70mph in the 40mph zone. It is not known which vehicle collided with the motorcycle.
...
The popularity of high-speed street racing has heightened since the release in Britain almost a year ago of the film The Fast and the Furious.
A surprise hit that took more than $85 million (£56 million) in the United States, the film was a glamorous depiction of the world of illegal street racing in very powerful, highly modified cars.
Although the film carried a disclaimer, it was criticised by American organisations such as Racers Against Street Racing.
The street-racing craze has also been reflected by the success of the magazine Max Power: each issue sells more than 200,000 copies. Its website also features reports on “cruises”, car park gatherings at which boy racers show off their modified vehicles and which often end with illegal street races. John Sootheran, editor of Max Power, has insisted that the magazine did not condone the pursuit, but admitted that details of the meets could be posted in its chat room.

Also glad to see that a simple low-brow film is the cause of all of this too. I mean, we have ALL seen the film Fast and Furious and therefore we want to go out and road race - NOT.....
I saw The Matrix again the other week, I think I will get my black trench coat, some sun glasses and some serious military hardware and shoot up someones office - well thats the comparison that they are making.....
Morons....

Absolutely. Tar and brush come to mind.
The Korsa Krew wiv their Kombat Kits are silly boys with no road etiquette and hardly any experience. We've all been teenagers, and all no doubt have done silly things on the road, but sticking a fin the size of a blue whale on your car does not allow you to drive like a pillock.

hmm ironic this. An 1100cc motorcycle. Whom may i ask owns one of these without the intention of using it "properly"? Even if it was a cruiser.
And a 'high-powered' Volkswagen Golf GTi? is that one of the factory WRC models with the twin superchargers? Or did it have an XXL wing, as endorsed by Pox Mower?
Shoddy biased reporting indeed, although sad.
I agree with you, CarZee.
Whilst not wishing to dilute the tragedy with what must seem like trite car-based banter in it's wake (but this IS PH), I recently decided to keep the Porsche garaged rather than bring it into work following a local death in alarmingly similar circumstances but this time the car being a Porsche.
There must have been some Freudian reason for my behaviour but what you have said above must have had some influence on my rationale, however illogical.
I felt 'guilty,' somehow. Worrying.

I agree! anything over 125cc might be considered an extravagance. 1100cc Suzuki? I'm on the side of bikers mostly, but is there the slightest chance that this reporting is biased in favour of the police vs boy racer???? Huh, the only 1100 Suzi I know of is a mad bad bike that does about 175mph. Go figure.
Can someone confirm if the couple were on the same bike, as thats what the report implies.
And no just because you watch a film does not make you want to go out and copy it, otherwise there would be no English people in Scotland after Braveheart was shown.
I have a copy of The Fast and the Furious and havent wanted to go illegal street racing although the N2O does sound like a good idea.

I think you might have missed the point here.....
.....the point being dead people, their ownership of a honda motorbike does in no way diminish the seriousness of the offence comitted against them. On that basis if I have a crash in a TVR I ought to be locked up for longer if it is not my fault for having the nerve to drive the wrong kind of car.
Oh, hang on you are 16 and in New Zealand, so this is not exactly within your realm of experience. I suggest for an understanding of the concept of iropny you look further than Alanis Morissette.

... give the lad a break - I happen to agree with him. No-ones suggesting that the rights or wrongs of this are related in anyway to the vehicles involved - merely that the press report things in such a distorted and clueless way.
I mean, 'high powered Golf GTi' My arse. The bike almost certainly has more BHP than either of the Golfs involved. It's just sensationalist and inflammatory reporting and frankly, it detracts from the gravity of the incident. It's something our media are consistently guilty of.
Doesn't make the whole situation any less or more disgraceful, but Pelo is right to point out the poor standard of journalism.

thankyou CarZee! took the words right out of my mouth. And edited you post within the minute i had opened the thread...
Jeepers Creepers Dans, that was taken slightly the wrong way. sorry n all!

The types of vehicles involved are pretty much irrelevant here. Would it have been any less tragic if kiddies in their wofully underpowered Citroen Saxos (or whatever) had hit the couple on their moped on the way home??
Assuming that the car drivers had still been driving at that speed and the couple had still been blameless (which I am assuming that they were, although this may not be the case) the outcome and rights and wrongs would have been exactly the same.
The problem is, as has been rightly pointed out, that the press choose to sensationalise anything they can. It's how they sell papers. The unfortunate thing is that so many people choose to read this tripe and allow their opinions to be based solely on the contents of said rags, without taking time to consider the facts, add personal experience into the mix, and reach a balanced, educated mature opinion.
These people are however the ones the papers pander to, hence this is the only voice we hear. Sad indeed.

Id say the Golf GTI did, or it might have been the high powered Golf GTI?
Also while I am at it;
Why do journos always put the ages of people in, is it supposed to tug at our heart strings more if they are under 35 than if they were two old gits who had been married for 30 years and didnt talk to eachother?
Dont get me started on the Holly and Jessica media circus
