So I want to get a thankyou card and gift for a medical professional who has been very helpful for the last few years. I am moving far away so...

But question is what to get? You wouldn't get a dentist a box of chocolates right? They are female and married so the gift needs to reflect the thanks and no other kind of emotion.

Thanks

Plus a nice bottle of wine.

I've had a couple of nice hand written notes of thanks in my job but no booze. Booze would've been a lovely addition.

As someone in the medical profession I have had many gifts from patients over the years most being wine or whisky ... the ones that stand out are the ones where it's a heartfelt thank you message (doesn't need to be monogrammed paper etc...) could just be in a nice card ... those I keep (personally)

A bottle of Champagne or Prosseco and a card always goes down well. Dentists get loads of chocolates, sweets and cakes.

Agreed. No gift necessary.

A nice card with a genuine message of thanks is more than enough IME.

This, if someone has gone to the trouble of writing to say thanks that is enough, to be honest giving gifts cheapens it and sometimes can put them in an awkward position.

If you really want to give a gift, a spa day gift certificate, local nail shop pampering gift voucher - something like that. Women love that stuff.

Any gift for personal use will need to be declared to their employer and require ethical approval.

Best 'gift' for a medic is a note / letter / email saying thanks for a job well done.

Not only makes your doc feel good, but can also be highlighted during annual appraisal.

If you choose gift certificate for say, a spa, do you buy them for their other half or so or say, 3-4 for friends? Or just for them? At around £175 pp it gets quite expensive.

Go higher. Find out who their line manager is and write a letter of commendation. Try to get recognition for their hard work.
