This being our third season racing stock hatch I have suddenly realised that getting some form of insurance for me and the car may be a good idea.

Does anyone know of a good company that does this? How much does it cost per year, what is covered by it? Can you claim only if a car is written off, or do blown engines get covered? Does this also include personal injury? Any info would be appreciated!

If you want insurance for the car whilst racing then it is horrendously expensive. It normaly only covers body and suspension damage and wouldn't cover a blown engine or an engine damaged in a crash.
I work on the principle of self insurance in that the cost of £300 to £400 pounds per race and £1000 excess saved pay for all but total write off damage that may occur during a season.
I insure my racecar for all off track risks with CCI which also cover my trailer.

That is really expensive, and not really worth it considering the car is only worth about 5k!

I would like some insurance against theft from race circuits or when its on the drive at home, who would be the cheapest and best for this kind of cover?

I was told that race cars never get stolen from actual circuits if left over night, but something in me keeps telling me its a bit risky. I am not sure i could sleep well knowing the car was all alone on a deserted race paddock! Maybe i am just paranoid?

Hi Dank
I looked into insuring my stock hatch - BUT only for theft etc whilst off track/in transit - the cover included the trailer and tools/spares. cost was £150 i think (it was two years ago and the memory is going!)

I have also looked into like insurance/accident cover this was about £500 (i am currently waiting on a revised quote for this year)

When I wrote my car off last year at donington it will have effectivley cost me about £500 to reshell the car - and a lot of hours!!! (and it is not finished yet!)

But having done 15 races in 2003 and 2004 and only sustained this one lot of damage (although terminal) the cost of putting it right I guess is less than insurance would have been.

I don't think theft from race paddocks is very common. Usually there will be many competitors staying overnight in motorhomes and camping and I would think most would accost anyone who appeared to be taking a car they shouldn't.
