I currently have a D4 4.2 TDI A8 which I like an awful lot. I love the quality of the interior, the nice ride and the engine is out of this world, absolute torque monster! The things I don't like.............. steering is numb, whatever setting you have it on and also the car always feels huge. I've had Jag XJ's and 7 series previously which always felt to shrink around you a bit once on the move, but not the A8!
So, considering moving to an A7, either 272hp or the BiTdi. Just wondering if anyone had had both and will this solve my issues or is the steering still wooden and will it still feel like a big car?
Failing that I would consider an nice A6 avant??

The normal A7 would be a nice silent cruiser but coming from a 4.2 I think anything short of the bi-tdi would let you down. Its a big car but surprisingly chuckable around the corners and the power coming out of a bend is fantastic. Doesn't sound like a diesel either and average 35mpg with spirited driving

I've driven both and agree the A8 feels utterly massive on typical B roads. I'm not sure the '7 is all that much smaller in outright physical dimensions? I've only driven an RS7 on track and not on the road, but it felt similarly wide. The air suspension working with the steering does lack any sense of feel, so I'd say you're right to wonder if it'll make the difference you're looking for. Only option I suspect is to try one locally and see?
