lumpy on acceleration in first and second gear.

have recently changed the oil, oil filter, spark plugs, distributer cap and rotor arm and cleaned the air filter on my 98 chim, however filled the car up with sainsburys super and am finding the acceleration in first and second gear feels like there is a blockage, the car feels like it is about to stall. any ideas. i have read up all relevant sections in the "bible" but only the section on fuel filters seems possible. could it just be supermarket petrol, i dont know what octane it is , it said it was super[it bl---y wasnt] cheers!

Fill it with Shell Optimax only, and see if the problem persists. I get a bit of kangarooing occasionally when I use BP ultimate.

Are you sure it's a fuel problem and not just one of the usual Chimaera probs ? (Temp sender unit, stepper motor ?)

I had a similar sounding problem - engine almost cutting out rather than just missing not long after it was serviced. I suspected ignition and went through cleaning connections to coil & injection bits etc first & this seems to have resolved it. Hope this helps.

Sounds like all the work you did on the car missed out the HT leads.

My Chim developed a slight 'cough' at around 3,900RPM. Bought some new Magnecors and plug extenders from Tim @ ACT and all was sorted!

I also agree with the others - steer well clear of supermarket fuel. It's Optimax only for me...

Fill ours up with Sainsburys Super as it splutters on Optimax and really hates Ultimate.

am still on the same tank of fuel [no time to play yet this week], gave her a good run and the acceleration problem seems to have cleared, however she is still idling badly and feels like she wants to stall. will clean the stepper motor, put some optimax in and see how she goes. if that doesnt cure it, will change the ht leads. thanks for the advice, ML.

When mine splutters, I just take it as a sign that the car wants to go faster.

Hi Nuggs, thanks for the advice, just seen some formula power race quality ignition leads on ebay would these be comparable to the magnecours? would i be looking at using 8mm?

Hi Mike - can't comment on the Formula Power leads. What sort of warranty do they come with? IIRC the Magnecors come with a 10 year warranty. I also know lots of people who have the Mags fitted and are very satisfied customers! IMHO you'd be pushed to find a better lead for the price.

8mm will be just fine...

Hi guys, me again, just taken the car out for the afternoon, given her a good blast and filled her up with optimax. she is idling fine now but am still finding her lumpy in first and second at low revs, is fine at speed but not happy round town, going to try redex injector cleaning fluid otherwise magnecors seem the next step.
