Anyone else admit to this? I do it on everyone from ex girlfriends to work colleagues. It's amazing the stuff I have found out about people online. It's even better when people don't change their privacy settings so anyone can see anything on someone's "wall".

I didn't mean serious harmful stalking like turning up at your house or workplace but innocent stalking. I agree it can be very scary depending upon what you do with that information. I suppose finding out someone's workplace can be scary if in the wrong hands.

If I work with someone new I always, but always check out their social media profiles.

I work in IT in the Finance Sector. The people I work with should all be the sort who lock down their profiles so that you only see what you should...and for the very most part that's true.

I always scan LinkedIn. This DOES tell them you have looked at their profile but since I'm not doing it maliciously I don't care - I fully expect them to check me out, too.

I think it helps the conversation flow when you first meet people if you can say "I note you are interested in X" or whatever.

It's the new way. No harm in it.

hehe

I know I have been stalked on Facebook, "the people you may know" gives it away. A certain girl I was talking to on POF kept popping up, we have no friends in common. Not that I looked of course.hehe

Though I'm not silly enough to put anything too personal on there.

Yes I would definitely describe it as being nosey rather than stalking.

Done a bit of stalking on Facebook, when recruiting. Last year I scanned through 100 ish Cvs, selected 15 that were worth reading properly, then looked on Facebook to confirm my final selection, my favourite candidate had quite the feed, she burnt the candle at both ends, and there was a great picture of her snorting a fat line of posh.

Being a coke user wouldn't have excluded her from that company, but her lack of discretion was and her Cv went from the Interview pile to the bin.

Soon as I get someone's number I'll pop it into Facebook and see their profile. I've had too many bad dates from carefully selected photos. Also got talking to someone who was friends with people I have dealt with at work (work for the police so a little awkward!).

About a week ago I was driving through a place I hadn't been in a year or so and remembered that a girl I liked years ago in my early 20s used to live nearby. She was really in to me. Lovely girl, but she was incredibly naïve. So I always felt like I was looking after her, rather than potentially getting into a relationship with her. She left the people we worked with and I lost contact (pre Facebook of course. I'm not even sure I had a mobile at the time!)

I typed her name in, found her maybe 5th or 6th on the list. Recognised her. 2 kids. Single (Could have predicted that tbh) Obligatory "stay at home mum" line

Still really skinny, only now sporting enhanced assets. Even 15 years ago or so she was always moaning she had a very flat chest. Bit "orange" in some pics. She seems happy in the pics. I did contemplate messaging her and asking if she worked at X, but we have no mutual friends so it might be a lot weird.

Did recently look up another girl work colleague from a few years back. But we exchanged a few messages and added each other and that was the end of any real interaction laugh

And as aboce, when I get online dating matches I tend to stick the number into Facebook to see if they are a real person or a scam/catfish

On a related note, what do you feel is the ettiquete for adding people on FB?

Wait till FB is mentioned seems to be my style.
But I know a mids 30s, low IQ, chavtastic who just adds everyone, even when he's never actually met them and always gets accepted. Whereas I find that a bit awkward

Yes I do this all the time and sometimes I quite enjoy a bit of cyber sleuthing to find info about people that I don't even know that well (or at all personally).... probably a bit strange really boxedin

If facebook, twitter and these various sites ever make it possible for people to see who has been searching their profiles I suspect it would be very embarrassing for many people and possibly cause terminally damage the sites as well. Of course some sites such as linkedin do already allow tracking.

It is amazing the highly personal and compromising information people will put online even when it can easily be linked back to their real life. Having said that I doubt my own social media is locked down particularly strongly.

Any time I'm recruiting I have HR do a Facebook look over before they come for an interview. Sometimes people do give too much of themselves away and cost themselves an opportunity.

Notable remembrances include a steroid user who obviously liked to threaten people on Facebook and another was a young lady who admitted being light fingered (not with money admittedly) at her place of work.

They were allowed to go and be someone else's problem and not become mine.

When buying my RS4 convertible recently, the owner had an unusual name, so thought I'd check his FB profile out to see if he had any car related stuff on there, good or bad.

Couldn't see anything about the car, just the fact he was a hairdresser, openly gay, and absolutely immaculate, both in dress and home. Perfect I thought, the car will reflect this! So off to Aberdeen we flew, to meet him at the airport...

Could hear the car rumbling up to meet us, and as it got closer, it wasn't my stalkee. Maybe his boyfriend was driving it?

As the driver jumped out, and introduced himself, my wife and I looked at each other a bit confused, and when inspecting the car, we chuckled that it wasn't the gay hairdresser we thought it would be.

We told the seller he wasn't who we thought he was, and showed him the profile, he found it most amusing, as did we.

Anywaaaaaay...

So, make sure you stalk the right person!!

I still can't believe that people don't have have their FB profile locked down to private i.e. only friends only, i'm an (middle aged) old giffer in to the whole social media thing and only have mine visible to my friends on FB, despite being a semi-retired middle aged has-been i have no need or desire for the world and his wife to see my drucken/drug fuelled exploits of a weekend

This baffles me as well. Shirley these people know that everything they post is public? I'm guessing they don't know the implications of having a public profile. I've known of applicants in the company I work for being rejected because the recruiting manager looked at their Facebook and saw what they were like as a person

Not being clued up on FB - if you are stalking someone or checking their feed; can they not tell or get some alert or whatever?

I have an unusual surname, and have had a couple of former girlfriends get in touch who I never particularly wanted to see again.

They can find my address online, details of my personal investment company, info on my wife's business etc...

Internet's a scary place...
