We have kept a few envelopes of cash in the house as I hadn't quite figured out what to do with it (mostly money given to the children over the last few years), opened the drawer this morning and noticed that the envelopes didn't look right. On closer inspection, a sizeable chunk of cash has gone missing from 3 envelopes.

e.g the envelope with my son's name on it had £800 missing.

The other 2 had lesser amounts missing (still in the hundreds). I last checked maybe 6-8 weeks ago when it was all there.

The only explanation I can possibly come up with is that the cleaner has taken it. - It seems particularly suspicious to me that all 3 envelopes had money missing as if we weren't going to notice as long as they all had some cash in them. I would have thought a genuine thief would have swiped the lot.

I'm thinking there is practically nothing we can do. We spoke to the agency that provided the cleaner this morning and have since done the 101 thing. The Police say they'll be in touch as there is a potential suspect but I can't see anything coming of it tbh.

Nothing seems to cover cash in the home so I think we may be screwed.....Bugger

Easily said in hindsight, but why not get a small safe?

we had that conversation this morning - tbh it should have been in the bank but the interest on kids accounts is so measly, I hadn't found one that seemed worthwhile - again in hindsight a poor interest rate would be very welcome now......

Bit silly having cash of that value lying around.

A safe would have cost you a lot less. Could get one for £100 or so.

And as OP seems to understand, a bank account would have cost him nothing.

Unless cash is dodgy I'd always rather it was in a bank, mainly for reasons of fire/theft/accidentally putting it in the bin along with other rubbish.

ETA - that does suck OP, I wish you luck in finding out what happened but I suspect you're on a hiding to nothing.

There's little chance of discovering who took the money through any evidence.

A walk-in thief would have taken the lot so I would tend to rule out a stranger.

Have you had any house guests, say a party, over recent weeks? Or have the kids brought their friends around? If so then pointing the finger at the cleaner is pointless.

You could, for instance, install a camera over the drawer but all you'll discover then is the person who took the money on that occasion.

Look on the positive side: you've now learnt a lesson. If you'd had a burglar they'd have taken it all so the fact you've got some left means that the lesson didn't cost your everything.

Safes to burglars are rather like flashing hazards to parking wardens. Best to put cash in a bank.

I don't want to worry you, but have you checked your and your wife's jewelry?

Easy to blame the cleaner, but you will never know for sure will you.

Literally no-one - we were on holiday for a bit, then back to work and kids to Nursery has been the pattern for the last month.

That's what is making me think there is only one possible (still impossible to prove) theory.

I have a spare safe, its a small one, with an electronic keypad still in its box. I think we paid £120 for it a while back after ordering it in error. Yours for £40. It's sometimes useful having envelopes of cash at home - but we always leave it in the safe! Let me know if you want it!

And do your children know of the cash in this drawer?

Had a similar problem. Lost about 1K. I had my suspicions but no proof so I bought a safe and now keep all the cash in there. When I got the safe no more cash went missing. Get one with a key as the ones with keypads can be worked around.

They are 3 and 1 1/2 - if they did get in there I don't think they could remove some of the cash and put the envelopes back without causing a mess...

So on the balance of probabilities, I am ruling them out.

Kids?

Sounds preposterous but when I was about 3 or 4 I had my dad's wallet away as an innocent childhood game. I obviously knew what money was but not exactly the mechanics of it, can't remember what I was planning on doing with it either!

I'm surprised no one has come on yet to say your wife is obviously fooling around and has used the case to pay for hotel rooms. That's the standard PH response.

Probably the cleaner, but nothing you can do about it.

Set a trap, but a bit late for that as the agency have been alerted.

Although a couple I know broke up recently because the man had racked up loads of gambling debts and was taking money from various accounts to try and cover it.

But it was earning exactly 0% interest sat in the house confused

Then there's ISAs, fixed bonds, etc that were (are) ideal for funds that are designed to be left to mature.

Not a lot you can do now though I'm afraid, as you've already guessed there isn't going to be any way of proving it.
