Had BMWs own front/rear dash cam hard wired into my M6 a while back. All done at main dealer, warranty friendly, no untidy wires, all hidden behind panels etc...expensive as hell for what it is but really pleased with its functionality and slick touch screen menus.

So I was thinking can I do something similar for my F12. No official manufacturer dash cam that I'm aware of, would main dealer likely take on a 3rd party product install or would you trust an install to an independent? Would it cause an issue with cars official warranty or likely be a negative if still installed when selling car on? Tried using dash cam app on my iPhone but seriously drains battery and won't allow simultaneous video recording and playing music off my phone to car speakers via Bluetooth or USB. Yes I can just get a separate suction cup unit but wires trailing everyware, passenger always wants to use power socket to charge their phone, marks on windscreen, have to position and set up every time etc.....

Appreciate there are bigger problems in the world right now but if anyone has done similar can you advise?

Cheers.

Probably not helpful but surely whether a supercar, or a Fiesta, a dashcam follows the same principal?
Get one that is recommended for your needs and see where on your screen it can go.

Then run the wire through the headlining at top of screen along to the A pillar, down the inside of the seal of the A Pillar and then back underneath the dash to the Aux socket and plug it in using an adaptor so that the socket is still available to use?

The cables are very thin, they are just USB charger cables so can very easily, and neatly, be hidden under dash, cable tied to others and kept very tidy.

There are ways to hardwire it of course straight into fuse box if accessible and space in box available. But as you say, thats where it gets silly money for basically the same camera at the end of the day.

When I looked briefly into this last year I was told by one outfit that they can basically clamp cables in the wiring loom and therefore install it in such a way that removal is as simple as unclamping those wires. The company in question had done a 458 install already and from the looks of the photos it looked stealthy enough.

As regards warranty - I'd say it depends. Manufacturer warranty - they can't legally disclaim it for modifications like that, unless they can prove it directly led to the fault. Extended warranty is more grey - they can impose whatever terms they like, including zero modifications.

I looked at having this installed in my 458 however Dick Lovett advised against it due to having experience of warranty issues on previous cars. Thought it was more hassle so left it at that.

How can a dashcam invalidate a warranty? It is just an accessory plugged into the "cig lighter" socket?
Would a phone charger invalidate a warranty??

I fitted out my Porsche with a Mobius camera and a custom made bracket so the 25mm footprint on the windscreen is minimal. As an occasional weekend car I decided against using a hardwire kit which might flatten the battery, and instead used an external battery pack which is about the size of two inline cigarette packets and is connected to the camera by a length of USB cable.

FYI, the results are mighty impressive which is all I'm interested in. Mobius have now released a M2 version which may well eclipse the M1 version.

A cig lighter one wouldn't, of course. A hard wired one might, depending on the warranty terms and which warranty you're under.
