what is going on in this world, huge people more than twice the weight they should be moving their lard ar5es about on these electric armchairs,- some of whom are eating whilst moving. Not only if they tried to walk a little they may loose some weight but if in a collision with a pedestrian they could cause some serious damage.
What did these people do before the availability of these things ?

People have never been this fat, they weren't needed.

Some had wheelchairs, some were house bound.

I would point out that some people have medical reasons why they are obese - Thyroid issues and various drugs being the most obvious.

A friend's wife was pretty much round for the last 15 yrs and used a scooter - when she changed specialists, he found she was taking various drugs that shouldn't be combined together, she lost around 8 stone almost immediately.

Regardless, it's quite simple:

calories in > calories out.

Drugs can skew the calories out bit, so you have to adjust the calories in accordingly.

There are a very limited number of conditions where that's not strictly the case - Cushing's disease which sends the calories straight to fat is one; with an extreme case of that it would be technically feasible to be obese and starve to death at the same time.

Or perhaps not

How easy the calories are to digest seems to play a part.

iirc A rare cooked steak can yield 25% less calories than a well done steak.
With the well done steak the proteins are already denatured to an extent and therefore easier for the body to absorb, whereas the rare steak more passes through undigested and the body uses more energy to digest these proteins.

Peanuts are another example, 1oz contains approx 170 calories but the body can only get at about 130 calories as the cell walls are so difficult to break down.

Coating cooked rice in oil makes it less calorie efficient to eat.

Maybe they couldn't get to the shops in the olden days. So lost weight. Disability cured..

Are they fat because they are on a scooter, or are they on a scooter because they are fat?

Why don't supermarkets create incredibly thin aisles, which are inaccessible to particularly rotund people and/or mobility scooters, and then place all the cakes, sweets, crisps and 3L bottle of Rola Cola on those aisles?

...and you're saying that explains most mobility scooters? Or does OPs point stand?

As a mobility scooter user (and luckily not an obese one yet) can I just explain it's fking depressing not being able to walk or be as active as you used to be. Your self esteem really takes a knock.
A lot of people I know comfort eat because they can't do anything about their situation and it becomes a vicious circle when they look in the mirror and hear people laughing and making comments because they don't understand.
Scooters are great and stop a lot of people being stuck in the house.
A sobering thought. I bet at least one person reading this will end up using one at some time.

In Las Vegas I saw a huge bloke on a mobility scooter drive it onto one of those long travellators that run along the strip, thus allowing him to give his thumb a break from pushing the go button.

Whilst that's mostly true, there are some relatively rare medical conditions where dieting will cause people to starve whilst still putting on weight.
