Car change time, thinking of going back to something VAG group, either a Golf, A3, Octavia - and definitely going for one with the 1.9 PDI. And this is shed style, so I'm keeping price down to around £1500 tops.

A few years back I had an A6 1.9 TDI, engine was brilliant. It had done 190k before the turbo went, and the last 70k of that was done on a Revo map (made it move quite nice, up until the turbo went).

But looking at the options, that 1.9 diesel is available in a range of tunes out of the factory. Anything from 100 to 150bhp in the models that I'm looking at. I know that the engine always feels a little rough, but but is there anything specific to look at with the variants of this engine?

For example, is the 150bhp tune available in some of the Golfs more prone to wear than the 130bhp?

Yes they can have issues.

The early 115hp PD's were prone to head gasket failure.
The 150hp & 160hp versions were prone to camshaft wear.
The newer PD's after 2005 were prone to big and little end failures.

The sweet spot and best engines are the 130hp versions made between 2001 and 2005. The most important thing to do if you have a PD engined TDI VAG car is to use the correct spec oil and change it regularly (in fact this rules applies to any car).

I had it in my mind that the 130hp variants were the better option; guess I'll just keep an eye out for those then.

The A6 was under my ownership for about 5 years, I knew only too well of the oil requirements. It helped that we have a fairly decent independent specialist a couple of minutes walk from home.

Ta!

After driving a few, I've found a fairly clean 02 plate Golf TDI130.

Drove two before that - a 110hp variant that had definitely been tuned - pick was pretty strong. But various pieces of trim were falling off, and one of the back doors wouldn't open.

Tried a 150bhp variant. It didn't pull particularly well, the seats and ride were extremely harsh (typical of the 150?), and noticed that the drivers side rear wheel was slightly pointing wrong, then my partner whilst browsing underneath noticed that the passenger side sill was corroded to heck - she pulled a piece off. The garage owner then proceeded to try and jack up the car in the middle of the sill (promptly crushing part of the sill). We made a rapid move away from that one.

Final one was close to perfect. Slight rust on the front wing that is being sorted before I pick it up, and the cambelt is also going to be checked.
