At the risk if outing myself as uber-Council... I'm thinking of taking the kids to Blackpool illuminations over the weekend.

Are there any decent restaurants / F&C shops open near the seafront after 9 pm?

Thanks in advance smile

Bispham Kitchen used to be the best but I hear it is pretty average now. I'd recommend Seniors in Thornton, not on the sea front but a 10 min drive from South Shore. Whenever I'm home its still the chippy that I use.

Thanks - does that not close at 8pm?

That's the problem - most traditional chippys seem to close at 8pm which is too early for us.

We made the mistake of going there earlier in the year for a weekend. God awful place and nothing decent open after 10, just grotty, greasy burger vans and pubs / bars where you can't take kids. Best bet would be the McDonalds if you can put up with the mass of pissheads loitering there.

Yep. That sounds like Blackpool biggrin

I haven't been for years but the kids want to see the illuminations and I'm only going if I can have chippy biggrin

Went last week. Was rubbish TBH. Waited at the South shore lights for nearly an hour to get through. Was gone 11 before we got to the end ! Everywhere shut frown tip would be to do it from the North shore down. Much less traffic.

Last time to Blackpool for me.

There are a few open, I'll have to check on times for you.

Personally I'd skip the queues and cut in partway through..Amazed more dont.

If you're not dead set on a chippy then the new glass fronted Weatherspoons " Velvet Coaster" is overlooking the prom https://www.jdwetherspoon.com/food/menu?pub=0d4cde...

Another crazy idea...Walk wink The new promenade walk is excellent and ideal for cycles , prams and pedestrians.

The kids will love it, and you will too ..even if it is through gritted teeth wink

Why don't you eat before seeing the lights?

Off topic:-

If you like Chinese food, I can recommend The Mayflower, which is just past the Tower on the same side.

Mrs WR and myself went there last week, dined at 5.00, then came out just in time for the big switch on.

North Shore downwards sounds a good idea.

Actually so does walking - at least it might tire them out and we can have a quiet drive home smile How long is the walk?

Also eating before we walk also sounds good, but then I'll have nothing to look foward to biggrin

We normally walk southwards from the North Pier down to just past the Pleasure Beach, maybe takes 50mins to an hour, then get the tram back......(not expensive).

You can usually park your car in one of the back streets near to the North Pier.

(You can get a bag of chips in the middle of the walk, and eat them as you walk along in chav fashion)

Don't forget to buy a "Kiss me quick" hat......biggrin

We tried to take our son last night. Started at Squires Gate, hadn't even reached the Pleasure Beach after 30mins.

Escaped, drove up to the Imperial and cut back in there to go South. Standstill again. After another 20mins or so we eventually reached the Metropole and escaped again.

We live here and only wanted to take our 2yr old passed the tower as he's obsessed with it and can see it from his room.

Looking at the flow of traffic from each direction, town seems like the bottleneck and you'll get stuck in traffic in either direction until you pass it.

imo the best way to see them is to wrap up warm and walk them, if it's a clear night the better. That way you can stop and eat or pick up some donuts or nip in for a brew somewhere.

I've never seen the point in trying to drive along there, it's always at a standstill. Just walk, at a gentle pace, and you can easily pass a pleasant couple of hours.

So driving (whilst appealing to my laziness) seems a no-no and walking seems to be the preferred suggestion - thanks all.

I'd rather not park my PoJ in a sidestreet to be honest, I'm borderline paranoid about it getting stolen. So Im guessing the West Street pay and display is the best site?

Thanks again

ETA Just realised there's a Harry Ramsdens open until 10 (ok, it's not great, or even good but it will be warm and cosy) biggrin

I wouldn't use West St.

Much easier to access South Shore,....safer and more secure parking.

Exit J4 , Preston New Rd , Waterloo Rd , Park Nr South Shore Railway Stn. 2 min walk to the prom wink

The obvious chippy that hasn't been mentioned is Harry Ramsdens in the Tower building. It's one of their new restaurants that does other food besides fish and chips, also does alcohol

Their is another couple of chippy at the south end of the illuminations. One is on Squires Gate Lane just before you turn on to the Prom and the start of the illuminations, this is open till 10ish I think on Fri/Sat. There is another one about 1/4 of a mile away from that one and about 200m in from the Prom on Harrowside. This has just won the local papers chippy of the year award for the second year running, although I don't think it is open as late as required. Just up from this chippy is the Armenian Kebab shop, the best in town (open till 10pm). It was nominated in this years British Kebab awards in the "best takeaway outside London' category.

Not a chippy but next door to the Tower there is the Wild West Dinner, obviously Wild West themed.

As has been said, if your driving through the illuminations on a Fri/Sat plan for a long night. It does usually ease of a little after 10::30ish.
It doesn't really matter which direction you come from as both will be moving slower than walking pace.
If you consider using the trams you would be best trying to get on them away from the central area of Blackpool as there will be big queues the nearer you get to the town centre. They will be very crowded. I believe you can pre book to go on one of the illumination themed trams.

A friend of mine recently said there's a good chippy in one of the streets behind the Norbreck Castle hotel, but I cannot for the life of me remember what it's called.

There are a row of shops on Norbreck Rd just of the Prom, so it could be there. I'll be going past them tomorrow so I'll have a look if there is a chippy amongst them.

For a traditional chippy go to The Middle Chippy on Redbank Road, 500yds down from the prom and open until 11pm whilst the lights are on.

I never understand when people are disappointed with the illuminations, it's just loads of coloured lightbulbs, what were you expecting?

My only complaint is how tatty they look. The lights on the Tower have only been completed recently and there were already huge chunks of them not working up the side of it.
