I had the wheels off yesterday for a good clean and I noticed oil along the bottom of one of the rear hub carriers and oil on the inner tyre wall. The oil has the consistency and appearance of clean engine oil. There is no discernible leak from the brake calliper or damper and no oil on the driveshaft. The driveshaft outer gaiter is new and in good order. I can see oil on the inside on the hub carrier and a line of oil around the wheel arch where the inner tyre wall has thrown it outward.

Any ideas where I should look next, I'm assuming it must be from the outer CV joint though I thought that would be grease rather than oil

If it is on the inside of the hub carrier then either the outer CV boot or the wheel bearing seal at the back.

Thanks Iain, do you know if the wheel bearing has to be dissembled to change the inner seal. Just trying to avoid having to re-torque the bearing

You will need to remove the driveshaft and undo the big nut to extract the drive part inside the bearing.

Then you can see the seal.
Do check it is not the outer CV boot leaking though first!

99% of the time its the cv joint leaking because the outer cv joint cap bolts need a re torque, try doing them up before spending any money.

Cheers, I'll do that. Any idea on torque setting?

Don't know torque setting off the top of me head but will check my notes at work tomorrow, think there going to be somewhere in the 35flb--45flb range but will check.
