Hi, has anyone here done a track day at Bedford recently?

I went there last year and failed the static noise test (after being a complete mug and forgetting to knock the revs back by the odd 1K like most people do)but they still let me out on track. I managed not to get kicked off by short shifting at the points where the noise meters were.

A friend of mine told me that this year they won't let you on track if you fail the static test. Is this true?

I got kicked off weekend before last.

I got past the static with no probs, and then got black flagged on two of the drive by's

I proclaimed that there must be a mistake, so they let me out again, and i spent the rest of the day short shifting past the sensors, until the afternoon, when i think they put one out on a mobile van, then the game was up !!

I think the drive by has been lowered from 89-86db, which is pretty low, sow whatch out !!!

There's been some question about this recently. Sean from Fastrakdays spoke to Bedford last week and confirmed that they have not changed the noise limits and are not enforcing them any more strictly than before. Whether this is reflected in reality I don't know at this stage.
What I do know is that I was at Bedford on 5th Feb and failed the static test spectacularly, but was fine on the drive-bys. It really does seem to vary a lot from car to car and the location of the exhaust exit point relative to the position of mics.

I presume they will let you on track even if you fail the static test. What did you score on the static test?

Tony,
Yes they will let you out if you fail the static test, and they give you one chance to 'make changes to the car' if you fail the drive-by.
My car reads c.106 /107. 964 C2 with decat, cup pipe and cup airbox with K&N.

I think I'll give Bedford a go then. My 964C2 gives 103/4 with decat custom exhaust but seems relatively quiet on drive-by

I got busted twice on the 5th at bedford.

Once when following an Ultima - i eventually made them see sense and let me go out on my own - was fine

Second time for tyre noise

How was the 5th? I got snowed in up in Norfolk! Was it clear all day? I'd even put the Tax Disc Holder in the car for you!

Ah, the snow. I was determined not to get snowed in again. We had loads of snow down here in the s/east and the driveway on our estate was covered in nearly three feet of it having drifted across fields (our neighbour got stuck for three hours!)

The day at bedford was clear. Just one quick sprinkle of rain and clear all day!

Bedford is the only track where my car has failed the static and they've then gone to great lengths to point out where the trackside mics are -excellent chaps!!

I queried these new limits with RMA.

The noise limits are the same as last year, except there are now 2 more noise meters on the track.

If you fail the static test as I do quite spectacularly, as long as your drive by is OK then no problem.

Decat & a cup pipe- altho they sound glorious, is a bit of a risk for noise at some tracks tho & supprised you passed at Bedford, it could be an issue elsewhere tho.

Iguana,
It will definitely be an issue at other tracks, no doubt about it. In fact I was very surprised not to be black flagged for noise on the drive by - maybe I just drive like a granny ! To start with I was consciously short shifting at the mics, but gave up and just went for it after lunch. There are so many different factors contributing to the noise output on any given day, atmospherics etc. that I would not be in the least surprised to pass one day and fail the next.
Longer term I suspect I might have to go down Mel's route and install a boggo C2 primary silencer, or if I win the lottery go for a custom H&S system limited to 98db.

Is anyone here doing the Fastrack day at Beford on Good Friday?

I'm doing the events here in June & July having been here once last September. I found it a very hard to learn circuit compared to say Brands or Goodwood but I suppose if your gonna have an off track moment it's better here than anywhere else.

I'll be there again, 1st track day this yr. Went there few times last yr, and it wasn't until the third time that I remmembered all the corners! It's a long track and as it's an airfield track, it's all flat and kind of feature-less, so quite difficult for someone like me who's not used to driving on tracks to learn the track. Will try some other tracks this yr now that I'm a little happier / more famillier with my car's handling.

Well, if it means I forsake the popping and banging on the over run for the oppurtunity to drive Bedford, Castle Combe and Goodwood, then so be it!!

Oh, and I don't have to wear ear plugs under my crash helmet any more!! At least I can hear when the big end goes now....
