Blimey. I was only saying to MrsC recently, there are SO many successful, well-known songs which this guy penned.
I guess there must be a list somewhere?

I used to play in bands around the Hull area many years ago. One band I was in were looking for a new manager, and we went along to meet a potential new manager/promoter in his office, a real Arfur-Daley-of-the-music-world character.
After some of the usual “what I can do for you” type stuff, I asked him who he’d managed and promoted previously.
“You heard of Gary Glitter?” he asked (this was prior to all the convictions, of course).
“Yes, of course,” I replied.
“Well, nearly managed him once, back before he was famous. Never saw him having a future in the music business, though, so I never signed him up.”
“Oh… er, OK. Anyone you HAVE signed that we’d know?” I queried.
“Oh yes. Have you heard of Rod Temperton?” he asked.
The other guys in the band looked puzzled (indie music types).
“I’ve heard of Rod Temperton,” I said. “Heatwave – Boogie Nights, and of course Michael Jackson’s Thriller among others. Wow – you managed him?”
“Er, nearly. He brought in a cassette with some his songs on and played them for me. I told him to stick to the day job, though. But I COULD have been his manager if I’d wanted…”
I wasn’t impressed.

Well, I'm a definitely a rocker-type, Raygun, but great music, be it Beethoven or Rod Temperton, is still great music.This man was up there with the greats.
It is sad, though, when some people don't get the recognition they deserve.

I'm a rocker type like yourself Mike and in the late 70s early 80s with my Triumph 750 motorbike it had to be rock music and like you over the years I came to realise there was a lot of great music that wasn't rock.It is sad, though, when some people don't get the recognition they deserve.
Being the anorak I am I always check where an album was recorded, who else is playing on it and who wrote the songs, quality normally is Temperton, Porcaro, Phillinganes, James Ingram etc.

I'm over 40 and not into rock at all; more dance and electronica but I knew who he was and was shocked to hear a) he'd died and b) he was only 66.This man was up there with the greats.
Boogie Nights is a guilty pleasure of mine, I love that track. Once I knew who wrote it I then tried to find more of Rod's songs. His gift for a bassline was sublime.
