I am working with a customer of ours who is looking to have a website developed. Pretty standard, just a presence, but also with a customer portal for their customers to login to. Once the customers are in, we then want them to be able to view bits of data pulled from another platform using a JSON/REST API. I have all the documentation that details the API and database structure.

We've had a quote that, with fag packet maths, equates to about 40 man days at a good rate. I think this is excessive.

I've used PH'ers before for projects and always had success, so I'm trying you guys again! Does anyone out there feel they might be able to help with this, and crucially have the spare time to work on it over the next few weeks?

We could look at this. The fact that you have documentation should expedite us calculating man hours. PM me and we can discuss

For the customer portal, could you not create something using Cyfe.com which I believe offers whitelable solutions

It depends on the complexity... what levels of security you are building in, what is pre-built, (i.e. Are you building from scratch, or using an off the shelf system like Wordpress), and how much you have to do with the data, even whether it is small or large amounts of data... not difficult to spend that amount of time on a bespoke system, equally possible to write a basic system that grabs data through JSON and puts it in a database with that code only taking a few hours to write... it is all in the detail...

Happy to quote on it smile

100% of our work is bespoke stuff which doesn't fit in an off-the-shelf package.

TBH 40 man days could be quite a competitive quote depending on many factors including type of authentication required, hosting, resilience, branding/artwork/content, documentation, how the site is intended to be managed/have content changed post-development, scale of data being shipped around, how the data is to be stored, and so on. Equally the quote could be undercooked or overcooked.

I'm another PHer who builds bespoke systems (web facing and internal) for a living so PM me with details if you want a second opinion.

A website and an api for 40 days is probably very good. Obviously I do not know the level of detail discussed, but if it's being done properly, I would say thats a quick turn around.
