996 engine rebuild
Discussion
Hi chaps ......I know this topic has been done to death ....but just wanted to get your collective opinion on something.
I am off to see a 1999 tip on Saturday, that has had an engine rebuild roughly 10k miles ago.
the rebuild was in excess of £11k, and was carried out at Charles Ivey.
I know that Hartech are the 'go to' engine re-builders .....but does anyone have any experience or views on CI re-build?
regards
Snaz

That rebuild wasn't that long ago. Why would someone sink that kind of money into a rebuid and then turn around and sell the car just 10K miles later?I am off to see a 1999 tip on Saturday, that has had an engine rebuild roughly 10k miles ago.

That recent of a rebuild should have a warranty on it still. Any warranty? If so is it transferable to you if you buy the car?

Not everyone doing a 15-20k miles like you every year If the car was not daily, people usually do 5-7k maximum in U.K., and if its maintained properly i think it's fine. (considering it was a good rebuild, upgraded most common issues like cooling and etc...)That recent of a rebuild should have a warranty on it still. Any warranty? Yes, this. The 'value' of a Hartech rebuild is that they address the weak points in the engine, such as machining their own cylinder liners. I don't know how many other engine builders/Porsche specialists have this capability/knowledge.
In theory, any decent engine builder could rebuild a 996 engine, replacing failed parts like for like (I have a few friends that I'm sure could do this), but this wouldn't be of any particular value over a car that hadn't failed in the first place.
