Petrol Tank Sender

Hi Guys
Went out for a blast today tank registering 3/4 full,
big mistake half hour later plus 25 miles ,found my self coasting on to a forecourt of a garrage ,out of fuel.
You guessed it Gage reading just under 3/4 full!!Slight dilema put £20.00 in drove straight home,took out the Level sensor dipped tank 1/4 full.Scratch my head me thinks one of three things,Gage,Level sensor or VDO Unit.
Popped over to a mates place swopped VDO Sender units hey presto all is well,now for the Question has anyone else had same problem?, or is it just one of those "leccy Gremlins",you know the ones park the car one day all is well come back the next to find you,ve been Gremlined.
Are they easy enough to get hold of?VDO Unit that is not Gremlins.
